I'm getting ready to gut the speakers out of my car because one is blown. And I have a head unit already that I'm tossing in.
Couple of Q's...

Is the stock system amplified? I mean by an external amplifier. If it is, I assume I'll need to remove it and runn al new wiring. Is this right?

How in the world can you get the dash speakers out?!? It looks impossible at first glance.

Also any install tips for the head unit & speakers are welcomed. I've not looked at this too in depth, but I need to do something because that blown speaker is pissing me off.

I don't think so. My eclipse came with a regular tape player. What I did is got the infinity head unit, and the amp. Now, if the head unit did not have an amp, the speaker were getting the input from the head unit directly. I dont know if yours is like that too, but I assume that the factory wired it up so if that the car was already set up for both systems, they just slap there stuff in there. Check the head unit harness, it should have the speaker wires on it too. They are paired up by the colors. Get that figured out connect them to the head unit, and it should already be set up, you dont have to remove anything, slap your speakers and your good to go. search for the speaker wires diagram its somewhere here. I have it if you need it.

Ok. I did a a little more research on it. Just thought I'd post this up in case anyone else has questions.

It is amplified. And from what I can tell only 4 of the 6 speakers are amplified. Not sure which 4 yet. I'll find out as soon as I goto do all this.

Dash: 4"F (need to use an adapter plate for 3.5" speakers)
Front Door: 6-3/4"
Rear Seat Side Panels: 6"x9"

To replace the factory deck you need a special harness.
I found one for $25 at http://www.installer.com/cars/mitsubishi.html This harness allows you to keep the factory amp.
This is in addition to the install kit & wire harness. Crutchfield.com has the wiring harness, adapter plate for 3.5" speakers, install kit & speaker harnesses.

mitsumaster,
I'll look into that whn I take all this apart.

Another thing. I'm browsing speakers on Crutchfield and it lists some 6 1/2" speakers with the 6 3/4" speakers. What's the deal????

The factory Infinity came in a couple of flavors, amplified and not. The cars are set up for the amplifier, at least as far as the speakers go. You may already have the DIN cable that runs from the head to the amp, since you have a fancy-schmantzy Eclipse, while we riding it steerage down here with our lowly bastard-child Talons don't deserve fancy things like powered antennas and remote CD changers.
The dast tweeters just pop-out, pry up the edge with a cloth-covered, flat screwdriver. There's two sets of wires going to the dash speakers, one that comes from the amp, and another I'm still not sure about. The amp goes under the passenger seat, and audio people will tell you how much it sucks. I think it's fine, but I also think there's so much ambient noise in a car that it'd be the last place I'd hope to hear high-fidelity.
You probably also already have the DIN cable for the remote CD changer, since it's an Eclipse.
The factory amp runs directly to the dash speakers, and I'm not really sure what goes on with the door and rears. They seem to be fed from the radio _and_ the amp. But without an amp, the dash speakers are mute. Or, moot.

Thanks for the tip. I don't plan on competing. I just need something that sounds better than what I have now.
This is amplified becuase I found the amp under the pass. seat. I have the harnesses on their way now.

Well I just got done ripping into my car. The head unit & XM receiver are in. Still have to finish the speakers.
But....

Only the dash speakers are powered by that amp. How stupid is that? I wired everything else up just to see. The door & rear speakers work fine, but the dash ones don't.

I bought a harness to still be able to use the amp with my current head unit. The only thing is that it has a blue wire coming out of it and no instructions on where to plug it in. So I tried the remote wire(since blue is almost always remote). Nope. So I plugged it into the switched 12v. that works, but it makes a sort of 'pop' when it comes on. Any ideas where this is supposed to go? I just said heck with it and left it unplugged for now.

The door and rear speakers are wired to _both_ the head and the amp. The dash speakers are wired out of the amp, only. I don't know why nor how nor whut.
I _think_ that blue wire is the constant-power source for the rear CD changer.

Hmm. The doors & the rears work fine without the amp. I dunno. I think I may yank that sucker out. Surely I can find a way around this.

just wondering if you got the stock Infinity system with the amp and cd player did the cd changer come stock or was it an option.

Steve
CD Changer is optional. The cable is already ran for it from the factory though.

Thanks for the info, just got my 2G and i'll never learn about it unless I ask.
No problem. The changer will be in the trunk if you do have it. Covered with cloth.
