Have any of you ever done this or thought about doing this? I like the GReddy Type-S and have concidered getting one. But the one and only thing I really hate about it is that dayum purple top!!!! So, have any of you ever painted or re-coated the top another color of your choice? I wanted to paint the purple to chrome/polished so it would match the rest of the BOV and just be an all polished/chrome BOV. I was thinking Duplicolor high temp chrome paint would work, but what would I use to prep the top for repainting? Thanks for any input...

Wheny uo get it new the top doesnt have the sticker on it, so you could have it powder coated any color you want and slap the sticker on.

You can also get the jdm version it is black.

I am going to call greddy and order a new sticker then polish mine.

See, thats what I was thinking. Ive never seen the "JDM" version of the Type-S. Do you have any pics and where can I pick one of those up at? I dont see it on the GReddy websight, but maybe Im overlooking it

yup i know wat u mean.. i hate that purple stuff.. i was gonna make a thread bout it.. but u beat me too it.. ideas would be great.. planning to just polish it off.. i dont care if it wont have a sticker..

anyone have pics of their redone purple greddy type s?

I want mine completely polished. Im buying Candela's (Austin) so Imma call around and see how much a place would charge for a professional polish job to get an idea for how much it'd be. Id still like to hear everyones ideas. I like GV Talons idea and I may try that too but I dunno how easy this anodizing comes off

Here is the car he is talking about.

i just painted my whole BOV black. just sprayed some brake cleaner on there and used some of that engine enamel paint from Autozone. i didn't even have to sand it down or anything. i'm trying to go for a sleeper look so next i'm painting my IC pipes.

why does the engine bay matter if its a sleeper? sleeper is just not modded-looking on the outside...

anyway, back on topic...i just polished my stock BOV and it looks pretty good...not a professional job, but very good for a quick home-done job. :thumb:

okay well i meant less noticeable then...especially to the smog guys. out here in Cali they do underhood visual inspections.

LOL.. im from cali.. i had to do those enhanced smog.. man.. he checked my engine bay.. asking wat the bullet looking thing was (hks ssqv bov). and why my pipes were different color.. LOL.. good thing he didnt notice the fmic.. i have a k&n fpik.. good thing it has a carb sticker.. told him it was the carb for the whole intake sy stem.. LOL.. guess he thought thats why the pipes were different color.. and i just told him car was stock turbo.. etc etc..

im still surprised i passed..

Why not keep it the way it is. The purple is the greddy type s trade mark. People look under my hood all the time and see it. They know what it is because its purple. I'd say just leave it.

Yeha I don't like that purple either. Will oven cleaner or brake cleaner work pretty good???

JDM Type-S for those that were wondering.

The oven cleaner trick:

You don't want the environmentally safe oven cleaner. You want the nastiest stuff you can find.

Take the hat (purple top) off by removing the allen bolts. Watch for the spring to pop out and take note of how it comes apart so you can put it together corretly.

Take the hat outside and place on newspaper or a board and spray with a healthy does of oven cleaner. It should start to take off the anodizing in a few minutes. Spray the hat off with water (garden hose if you are still outside).

Repeat if necessary. You can also use fine scotchbrite with oven cleaner to help get stubborn anodizing off. Wear rubber gloves.

!!!DO NOT!!! leave the oven cleaner on for long periods of time. The stuff is so nasty it will actually start to eat into the aluminum.

Now polishing it. This can be done several ways. Fine sandpapers or a dremel with a buffing bit or a bench grinder with a buffing wheel and buffing compound. Mothers is also an excellent final polish.

*This the method I've used in the past. I claim no responsibility if the procedure does not work for you or causes damage to your item.

Because not everyone likes purple. Some people (including myself) like to be at least half color coordinated. Thanks for the VFAQ GVTalon, I plan on doing that as soon as I recieve my Type-S :thumb:
