Toronto,
Hello All,
I am debating getting a carbon fibre hood for my car. I plan on driving it in the winter time and I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not a southern ontario winter will have any adverse effects on the hood itself. Thanks.

I've never heard of climate affecting cf, but I would be worried about the effects of salted roads on the finish of the hood.

Hmm, I was more worried about the cold making it brittle or something like that. I'm not too worried about the salt so much, seeing as I'll have it clearcoated.

Well that's what I'm talking about (duh)...the salt will eat right through the clear coat. Show cars and aftermarket modfications usually never fair well in harsh conditions.

Get one and just put the stock hood back on for the winter. I wouldn't use my hood in the winter. Heck, I won't drive my car in the winter.

I meant the same clearcoat as the rest of my car. As long as I am diligent in rinsing it off every couple of days, I don't think I'll have a problem. Or I might just paint it the same color as my car, in which case I wouldn't have to worry at all.

I really do wish I was able to afford a winter beater, that would solve all my problems.

Now what would be the point in that? If you're going to paint it the same color as your car, why not just leave your stock hood on? I'm not trying to rag on you, but that makes no sense at all.

of course it makes sense. the point of a CF hood is weight reduction. sure they look nice but some people may want their hood to be the same color as the car but sitll want the weight reduction..so you paint it

i have the same question, as i just bought an evo style Carbon fiber hood, looks like this:

Seibon Carbon Fiber Hoods - EVO Style for 95-99 Mitsubishi Eclipse at Andy's Auto Sport

and was wondering since its carbon fiber and there are 2 bit holes with nothing but mesh screen in them, would that mess anything in the engine bay up? or will my hood to torn to pieces from ice and what not? pretty noob question i know, but i dont wanna take the chances and im sure some other people have already done this.

Sun is the biggest enemy of carbon fiber. It the uv rays will continue to cure the resin in the carbon fiber. So long as you have an adequate coating on it either a few layers of good clear coat or paint and clear coat it will be fine, in the snow, salt and the sun

As for making it brittle, I cant imagine it could get more brittle, look at a F1 crash LOL Remember that carbon has to be stored in freezers to keep it usable so the cold isnt an issue.

No it doesn't make sense to spend that much money on a CF Hood just to paint over it. If you want to have a paint matched Hood that cuts weight off the car, buy a fiberglass Hood and paint it.

you bought something from andys auto....

x2, I have never heard good things about them. I got something in through the office, the other day from them. Said to myself, "WTF?" But they ended up being PIAA headlight bulbs, which is prob the only thing Id trust buying from them.

A real carbon hood weighs less than a fiberglass hood. Most of these crap carbon fiber peices people are buying are just carbon over fiberglass. Get a real carbon hood and paint it. Most of us don't like the rice look.

You consider a carbon fiber hood "rice"?

You can call it whatever you want. Its an opionon.. I call it ricey because half of the people here are just buying carbon pieces for the look. Most of us do not need carbon dash pieces. We want funtional parts. I need a carbon fiber undertray not a cowl.

Ah, gotcha sir. :thumb: I agree people go overboard for street cars, then its ricey.

Salt will eat right through Carbon Fiber Resin? Since when? That "Clear coat" you speak of is NOT Paint. Its Carbon Fiber Resin. Cheap hoods back in the day used Shitty resin that yellowed over time, New Carbon Fiber parts are being made with the top of the line UV Resistant Resin. It doesn't yellow, and salt doesn't effect it. Its a hard surface.

And :applause: to the "CF is Rice" thing... Thats funny.

. Seriously that is just wow. So what do you consider people with lime green paint jobs, ugly tail lights that have fish in them? Unpainted body kits? You say Carbon Fiber is Rice... Wow. I must be a mad ricer then when I install my CF Hood, Hatch, Roof, Wing, and Interior Door Handles. #### all this time my definition of rice has been backwards.

It could crack it, why not buy the hood and use your oem one unroll it warms up?
