Resolved 1GA Hella H4 Headlight Upgrade difference?

i don't have any pics but i did the swap. i was quite pleased for the $. i ordered from Sasquena Motorsports (SP?). the owner is quite nice, helpful, and prices are fair. swap is pretty straight forward, just gotta pull the wires out of the harness that comes with the new housings and follow the wiring diagram to get them working. i would suggest going with the upgraded bulbs that they offer (nothing too crazy, just the ones a little above stock).

Sup guys I was thinking of ordering from JC whitney here:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/product.jhtml?CATID=193409&BQ=jcw2

Which one do I get? Keep in mind I don't want to blind people or get annoyed by people flashing there lights at me. Thanks!

Also, i'm assuming this doesn't include harness so where can i purchase or make one? Does anyone have links to a vfaq or online instructions? The ones i found didn't work. Thanks guys!

Talk about old. Just kidding. You have a pm.

since my brand new silverstar sealed beam lights got blown out dude to an alternator problem (which is now fixed), i was thinking of doing this hella h4 conversion that replaces the sealed beams, and allows you to use regular h4 bulbs. is it worth the time and $100 from mach V (http://www.machv.com/helh4headup8.html)? or should i just stick to $50 for a set of sylvania silverstar (http://www.sylvania.com/auto/silverstar.htm) sealed beams?

Check out JC whitney.com I got a PILOT H4 conversion kit for my 90 TSI for like $39.95 you just need to get some bulbs and sockets then wire them up. Wiring is strange, mine didn't work for shit at first but I kinda got them figured out just the high beam indicator is on with my low beams. Total cost of about $80 and you can get any H4 bulb you want. Mine are the blue style and they are alot better than the stock ones were

I've got the H4 conversion on my Eclipse, but I never saw what it was like with the sealed beams. I personally really like the H4s.

BIGGSIE: I'm in Fly Creek, dude, I'm so psyched to see that there's somebody else from Cooperstown here! We should hang out sometime. My Eclipse won't be driven until the weather gets better, but its always out.

Chris

i did the conversion to my 91 gsx and i love it i just bought the kit at autozone for 40 bucks and got some 120 watt bulbs off ebay for 8 bucks. i think it looks great and i can see 2x as good:thumb: good luck

I bought the Hella headlights from MachV a couple years back and I'm glad I did. I'm using a set of PIAA hyperwhite bulbs and haven't had any problems with them. I think it definitly improved visibility at night. I figured replacing a bulb if it burnt out was easier than replacing the whole sealed beam.

is it pretty easy to rewire the H4 conversions? i'm leaning towards getting it, since lots of ppl on here are really positive about it. the only thing is, i don't wanna be stuck in the garage all day trying to rewire the lights. since i work nearly 5-6 days a week, it doesn't leave much time for work on the car =\

nope doesn't take any time at all. what i ended up doing was using some krimps i had that fit right on each of the 3 plugs the bulb has and taping it up. total thing took like 40 mins just cuz of some rusty screws tho. good luck!

the deal with the hella h-4 conversion is that you are going to a e-code lens/reflector. e-code casts light in a different (better, more useful) pattern. i ran these lights 100w/80w for about 5 years in my 1G and was only "flashed" by an on-coming driver once.
old, janky 1G pop-ups rule the night...

I just found a really cool web site I thought I'd pass along.

I've been running a H4 headlight conversion in my 1ga to help solve the horrendous lighting of our DSM's. I've gotta tell you guys, its one of the best modifications I've yet to do to my Eclipse. Living here in Seattle, the weather is so shitty, you cant see 30 feet in front of your car, and the stock headlights are owe so pitiful.

IF YOU PLAN TO USE BULBS OVER STOCK WATTAGE, YOU MUST UPGRADE YOUR HEADLIGHT WIRING/RELAYS.

I'm not sure if there's a TECH write up on headlight wiring upgrade here. But if not, I'll try to do one.

I currently run Hella 100/80w (white) bulbs with H4 conversion head lamp lenses. Unfortunately I can't remember off the top of my head what brand the glass lenses are; but do remember purchasing them at Action Auto; a local auto parts store. Looking back, I regret not spending the extra 10% and going with the better made Hella lenses. They seem to be better quality and have a better ability to aim the headlight properly. There's more to the lens, than one might think.

In case you were wondering the number I refurd to when describing what bulbs I'm running; 100/80w. Is reference to the electrical draw the bulbs place on your vehicles electrical system. The stock head lamps are rated at 60/55w; 60w being your high beam and 55 being the low. As you can see from those numbers there is a big difference in the aftermarket and stock power consumption. This will translate to big improvement in all weather visibility. You can imagine, anything that makes this much difference will be regulated by the government, and indeed these are. As I understand it, anything over the stock power rating is meant for OFF ROAD USE ONLY. :sneaky:

You can purchase bulbs with relative ease up to 130/100w from sites like Rallylight, linked to above. Remember though, 130 watts is a huge increase from the puny 60 watts our DSM's were wired to run. This is why I cant stress enough if you choose to run headlights of high wattage; even just one step in level up; YOU'LL NEED TO UPGRADE YOUR STOCK WIRING!!

If you do check out Rallylights above, toward the bottom of the page you'll find some 130/100w bulbs I'd like to try next. These bulbs are designed to project a yellow beam for better wet weather visibility. I've never used a bulb like this, and if any of you have; I'd like to hear your experience. Keep in mind, these bulbs are WAY more powerful than the stock 60/55w yellow bulb are, and will have much much better performance.

I understand these Yellow Star bulbs to be less likely to blinded on coming traffic. I think this will be a major plus.

PLEASE IF YOU CHOSE TO UPGRADE YOU LIGHTING OR JUST INSTALL THOSE :notgood: SUPER NEAT BLUE HEADLIGHTS... INSTALL THEM PROPERLY; TAKE THE TIME TO AIM THEM RIGHT. THEY SHOULD BE OUT A FEW CAR LENGTHS AND TO THE GROUND. TRY NOT TO DISTRACT THE PERSON FORCED TO DRIVE IN FRONT OF YOU MORE THEN WE ALL READY DO.

Nothing makes me crazier! Its right up there with the new paint job and a 150k mile timing belt...:boring:

Step One: get rid of the sealed beams. It's illegal, but it's also bad to run over things. But you have hidden lights when off, so unless you make the grievous error of hi-beaming a cop, you should be fine. Hella makes some of the most available "real" reflector/lens replacements, but even the "diamond" setups on eBay are far more efficient than American sealed-beams, even the Sylvania Silver*Star sealed beams. You may find that with the better beam distribution that you have little need to crank up the wattage.

Write up on the rewire please. Or a place to purchase?

For a 1gb, all you can really do is grab a set of 'euro' or 'crystal clear' headlights on ebay, then put in some silverstars or retrofit some projectors in to the new housings.
