This spring i will be putting together a 91 tsi awd, and i was told the biggest rim that will fit on a 1g is 17", but i would really like to go 18", and how wide? The dsm bolt is 5 on 4 1/2 right?? the mustang is the same, so would 20" cobra R rims fit??? I think a chrome 20" 5 spoke would look pretty tight.

18's are fine stock height.

I suggest 17 or 18 inch wheels depening on where u live and the road conditions.

The cheapest 18's and 19's can be found at www.wheelmax.com and www.victoriatire.com for $900-$1,700 with free shipping.

18's will fit a 1G with a low profile tire of 35mm side width
19's will fit a 1G with a low profile tire of 30 mm side width

20's will not fit a 1G ever.....but if you camber it..... I guess it would work.....but I wouldn't suggest it.

20's are over the top IMO, but its your car... I am pretty sure 18s will fit with no real modifications. Most people get 17s because they look nice and are all you really need to look good. 1g's aren't ridden by that awful wheel gap that us 2G's have.

Ok let me clear this up, plus sizing wheels is simple and this is what you need to take into account:
1) Offset will need to be at least 42+ to fit a 19" wheel on your car.
2) 19s will fit with 225/35/19 tires.
3) Width of the rim shouldn't be more than 7.5" to avoid having to modify the fender. Very few 20s are less than 8.5" wide and that is just too damned wide for our little fenders. I squeezed 19x8" rims in without modding the fender but that's on a 2g and with 42+ offset.
4) If you are used to driving carefully because you have a lowered car then I'd say go ahead with 19s. If not, it's gonna be tough to do a crash course in careful driving to avoid potholes and big bumps and you'll most likely bend a wheel.
5) If you're willing to be extra careful when you're driving and follow all of the above sizing rules then by all means, go for it!
