cf hood repair

im thinkin of getting my friends cf hood but it has a big scratch in the front i was wondering if u can sand the clear off and just re clear it or will it not look right anyone with cf knowledge help me out

pm fabian he just got a hood with an ass load of scratches in it and i watched as he did his in like 2 days and now there arnt even noticable

just wanna chime in here; when i bought my tsi from the prev owner the cf hood was weathered and was pretty "worn" looking. The gel coat on it was faded and there were spider cracks where the latch is. I recently re-cleared the hood and it looks like a ton better. I cant even tell it was used.

If the scratch isnt too deep you should be able to fix it right up. A body shop would have no trouble but if you were going to work on it you need to experiment with which grit is going to help ya out the best.

I took a foam sanding block with medium grit and went to town on my carbon fiber hood sanding everything down as much as possible without actually getting to the carbon fiber weave. Then I drilled and split apart all my cracks so that I could fill them as much as possible. Then I just repainted the hood black to match my roof. I get compliments on it all the time now. The cracks in the gel coat are the hardest to get out cause there's a really big thick layer of gel coat on top.

Since you only have a scratch, just sand down the entire hood with a medium grit, go back over it with 1500-2000 grit and get it all really smooth and then hit it with some clear coat. Then get someone to compound and buff the hell out of it and you'll have a brand new looking carbon hood. The trick is the compound and buffing, because that really takes out all of the imperfections in the paint or clear coat.

my hood was full of scratches, if you get a very fine sand paper,(1600,1800,2000,2200) and wet sand it with a foam block, then buff it with some compound it makes the carbon look brand new. It was a completely different hood by the time i was done.
