problems with jvc 12 disc

this is happening to one of my friends cars. the cds wont come out of the box when you try to eject them and they also wont play. When I turn it on it reads R-8. any ideas anyone.

maybe it needs cleaned...my cd player needed cleaned when it read "ERR-04"
