hey guys....I took out my center console and tried to see what it looked like painted black...I have the crappy looking gray...I bought 2 cans of krylon satin black and flat black....I tested both of them and found that the flat looked too gray...so I painted it the satin black and I think it is too glossy looking...WHAT IS A GOOD PAINT FOR INTERIOR THAT LOOKS LIKE THE FACTORY BLACK???

No company wastes their time trying to make a black color interior paint that will match a factory/OEM black color. Your best bet is the VHT Plastic Paints especially made for car interiors. I bought the "Mitsubishi Grey" for my Lotek A-pillar gauge pod and it matches the factory color perfectly. I know for a fact they don't make a "Mitsubishi Black" or anything like that, but you might want to give their regular satin black a try.

Did you use Krylon Fusion?

What really works good is Duplicolor's Vinyl & Fabric paint. If you use the flat black, it'll look just like OEM. The stuff is great!!

When I did mine I used the Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric Gloss Black. Everything looks like its been freshly "armor-all'd". The flat would match perfect with the OEM black plastics.

yeah I used the krylon fusion satin black...and I dont like the glossy look to it...i'm looking for something that is more dull....but not flat black since I already tried it and didnt like it...what kind of prep do I need to do to the pieces?...I just washed them with soap and water and some dull steel wool

do you think the duplicolor flat will look the closest to factory black?? because I used some cheap flat black and it just made it look more grayer???

I think the flat will be perfect. I used no prep work either. Just two coats of the gloss and it looked like it was constantly armor-all'd. I think the flat would perfectly match the OEM dull black plastics.

Tried to PM you back, but it said you chose not to receive PM's or something or other like that.

thanks..i'm gonna go get a couple cans of the duplicolor flat black...i think it's because you arent one of my friends...but I'll add you and see if that works

THE DUPLI-COLOR FLAT BLACK IS THE 1 TO GET!!!! i have personal experience with this stuff!! looks super f'ing close to oem! if not identical!OMG i did my door panels, center console, rear panels and dash!:thumb: all came out great! and after almost 2yrs, still holding up including every day wear, and heat from sun!! all i did to prep it was using rubbing alcohol. stuff works well to get old amor all off and dirt..just be extra patient and do light coats.:thumb::thumb::dsm:

I just wanted to add that I based my opinion off of actually sampling both the Duplicolor Flat AND Gloss black. I had an old airbag from my car that had started to separate and I test spray both the flat and gloss black's from Duplicolor and the flat black is as perfect to OEM black as you will find. I personally liked the glossy look better and actually decided to go with the gloss black when painting the vinyl peices in my interior. I used Krylon Fusion satin black for all the hard pieces. (If I had to do it again, I'd use the Duplicolor for the entire job) If you care to see finished pics, check my profile gallery.

As for prep work, use a good degreaser. There's lots of good ones out there and some of them have already been mentioned in this thread. I used Simple Green and made sure to scrub deep down into the textured surface, ESPECIALLY ON PIECES THAT WILL SEE MORE CONTACT WITH OTHER PARTS (ie. around the cup holders and ashtray) AND WITH YOUR SKIN (ie. the center console and armrest). A good word of advice would be to gently use a red Scotch Brite pad on any vinyl pieces that you're painting. IMO it's not so much important to do it on the hard plastic pieces as long as they've been completed degreased.

Good luck with your paintjob.:thumb:

How is this helpful to this thread?

Because I'm trying to save him the trouble painting brings. Obviously you don't understand the right way of doing things either. Just look at your super fast +50hp body kit and totally awesome carbon taillights:notgood:. Welcome to the Rice kiddo.ROFL

If the title to this thread was "How do I change my interior from Grey to Black" then I could see how a response like "go buy OEM plastic and replace it" would seem like helpful advice. But it's not... he's asking for tips on how to paint his interior. You shouldn't assume that you know the intentions that the information is going to be used for by OP. Did it ever occur to you that either A) He's looked for OEM black interior and can't find or afford it; or B) Would like a custom black/grey interior that can't be had by simply replacing it with OEM black pieces.

On top of that, who are you to come into a thread and attack someone else's car because it's different then yours? What does my car have to do with "not understanding the right way of doing things? If you don't know anything about painting interior pieces, why would you open a thread titled "Interior Paint Question"?? More so, if you hate bodykits and other appearance mods and think that OEM is the only way to go, what are you even doing in a forum titled "Appearance: Interior/Exterior"? Unless you can bring something worthwhile to the table, don't bother putting your $.02 in.

I check this forum for ideas. I have seen good stuff with fiberglass and all that. I have found in my short time that all of the DSM rejects or "Ricers" that don't fit in over on DSmTalk somehow wind up of DSMTuners.

I'm just trying to help the kid avoid ruining his interior paneling by painting. It ruins the integrity as a whole. You wouldn't even know about integrity obviously when you through a huge body kit and fake taillights on an already well manufactured car. So who are you to give me your .02 when you are the red headed stepchild on the DSM family.

This site is for information and not for bashing other members cars. There is nothing wrong with interior painting and if its done right it will look good. So leave out your opinion if you have nothing to give that is useful.

Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric works great and can be used on most things, also good if your leather is starting to fade.

WOW! I've been on this site for quite some time and have never once been talked down to like I was the "red headed stepchild of the DSM family." You don't even know me or anything about my car or the fact that I picked my GSX up for next to nothing and that the previous owner is the one to add the kit and the taillights. Not everyone was fortunate enough to find their DSM from some old lady that never took the thing out of the garage. Not that I need to explain myself to you... after all, what the f*ck do I care what you think.

Don't come into a thread that you have absolutely NO experience on and post something that is absolutely no help to the OP (or any other post). And when somebody tells you that your post isn't helpful, don't resort to childish name calling.

Wrong I tried the carpet method writeup that was on here and it definitely was a waste of time. My tan carpet was in decent condition but I am a perfectionist with how the car looks and some old spots that would not come out even with the best of detailing supplies made me resort to painting. This was crappy. I just decided to go out and I bought OEm Black carpet. OEM is the only good clean, not hacked way to do something. Don't be cheap go out and spend and extra few dollars and do it right.

Its the same ideal as buying a 20G turbo for $300 on ebay when it is a knockoff. It may look good and function good for a bit, but it is bound to blowup someday way faster than going out and buying a Greddy turbo or something of that nature.

Also we tried painting my friends interior pieces on his Eclipse and they faded and looked cheap. Just hit up a local junkyard or ebay for pieces. You wouldn't slap it together with a fake turbo so why slap it together with spray paint. My point is valid. Did he ask for opinions against it? No, but I'm trying to save him the hassle and dissapointment you guys are trying to fill in him.
