It's time to replace the stock paper 6x9's in the back, and I'd like to find some 6x9 subs that fit. I know Kicker used to make some, and I've heard that Fosgate might have, also. If anyone has heard of others, I'd like to know about them. TIA

These will be my only subs, so I'm thinking that the extra cone area of the 6x9 will be more of a benefit than the superiority of the 6.5" round design in the limited depth we have to work with. I know that the 6w0's are too deep, or I'd go with them.

I have the Kicker 6X9's and love them. They are my only "subs" too. The give my system a little extra "punch" without adding a speaker box. FYI 6x9's have about the same cone area as an 8" woofer.

They sounded like dirt until is sealed up the body pannels around them with expanding foam and cauk.

I did have to do a little "adjusting" with a hammer on the fenderwell behind the speaker to get them to fit flush. It was nothing major though.

All in all, if you dont want a speaker box, and want a little extra bass, this is the way to go! I dont think Kicker makes these speakers anymore, check with your local dealer, Kicker may have some old ones laying around (Thats how I got mine).

Subs??? 6x9's aren't "subs". More like full range speakers. I'd suggest getting a nice 6.5 component system up front and a small amp....it will sound much better. Rear fill=:barf:

I had the Kicker 6x9 subs a few years ago. I had bought them to put in the stock 6x9 holes in the back of the Avenger I used to have, but the rear deck lid wasn't strong enough to support them so I took them out. When my 12" sub blew I didn't want to buy a new sub so I made a box for the 6x9's and the sounded great. No one believed they were 6x9's. They are basically oblonged 8" subs. I compared the thiel small parameters with the Kicker 8" subs and they are almost identical.

I don't know how deep the JL 6.5" are but if their too deep the kicker 6x9's probably are too. I don't remember the exact depth, but they have a real beffy and large cast basket, and a pretty good sized magnet.

hmm...i might go with this instead of putting in my 10 inch sub i bought. id like to save some weight! call me stupid, but are u guys talking 6x9 "subs'' as the same 6x9 speakers? if u hadnt noticed, im a bit audio illiterate.

Kicker makes low profile 6.5 and 8's that can be used as mid-bass or a small sub. Maybe you could rig a 8" to fit. That would be kinda cool and less weight plus stealth. Then just put amps under the passanger seat or in the trunk under the false floor.

Ryan, do you recall how much they stuck out before you hammered the fender? Is it possible that you might have been able to use a spacer and get them to fit?

Yeah, these Kicker 6x9's are not your Wal-Mart specials. These things are VERY beefy!

Mike:
They stuck out about 1/4" or so. It wasnt the whole magnet that was hitting the fenderwell, just one side of it. You could easily make a ring for it but then you would have to modify the interior pannel and also worry about the pannel rubbing the speaker. YMMV...

i had the fosgate 6x9's in my old truck. i used them as mid base, but they sounded very good :thumb:

since i have a spyder i was forced to look at all alternatives for audio setup. what i found out was that fosgate or kicker used to make the 6x9 subs, and then stopped production. i know that ma audio makes them, though, and at least 1 member here has them. my suggestion to you is to talk to the spyder owners, as they have the worst start regarding car audio, and then go from there.

(btw: if you were wondering about my particular setup, custom box with 2 eclipse 8 inch subs - hit surprisingly hard)

caveat: remember that if you're going with 6x9 subs that you have to run them off a different amp, and will lose everything but the bass in your backseat

hope this helps a little, and good luck!

Get some nice components up front, and some cheaper Pioneer 6x9's off E-bay for rear fill. Then get the Infinity Basslink, I've seen it for $220-$260 recently. ( ampman.com )

It would sound much better IMHO.
