Hey guys, Im finallly fixing my car up since it broke down almost 2yrs ago and I never got the chance to install the OEM sideskirts and Turbo Wing that I had for so long. I have done countless searches on exact directions or steps in order to do this the right way but never seem to find what Im looking for. So I decided to go ahead and wing it
since Im pretty handy with double sided Tape
and been working for a Toyota Dealership"satan" as Assistant Parts Manager for about 4 years now.
In all I came up with some good ideas that I thought would help out any DIY, but better yet I decided to put my .02 cents in and post the whole process from start to finish. I know there are some threads that give directions on screwing the skirts from underneath and using double sided tape , JB weld or window weld, and even some posts that say just let a body shop do it, and thats fine if that worked for them or paid someone to do it, but I prefer to do it the right and cheap way and for it to look like it came from the factory like that. I think thats what these forums are all about, to help each other out and avoid having to go to "satan" when you actually have the ability to do it yourself. Anyways I think I vented too much
So i guess what im trying to say is, since no one has posted the right way to do it by drilling into the body and using the factory hardware then here is my success story and almost fool proof method!!
Remember: This worked for me perfectly and Im in no way responsible for you messing up your car if you dont know how to read and follow directions. I couldnt have made the steps anymore clearer than what they all ready are, and if your still stupidly confused after reading them, then I would advise you not to do it!!
First of all below is the hardware your gonna need in order to do this:
1.) 6 piece OEM sideskirt set
2.) Complete OEM Hardware set ( You must get these from the Dealer since thats what fits the best
and holds up better vs. to the local parts store generic clips and screws)
Now as for the Tools:
1.) Double sided Tape
2.) Sharpie marker/pen of some sort with long tip
3.) Jack and jack stands to lift the car up
4.) Electric drill ( Perferably a 18volt drill cause your drilling into metal)
5.) Metal Drill bit set (your really just using a couple like the 9/64, 1/4, 9/32, and 25/64
bits but those usually come in a set)
6.) Utility razor knife
7.) Primer paint (Spraycan or any other method you prefer)
8.) Rubber or Metal Hammer
9.) A helping hand (cause its hard to line up the skirts and those holes correctly and
marking them at the same time.)
Now that you have all of the stuff needed, your ready to ROCK!!
Step 1.) Make sure you clean and prep the side areas of your car by removing any dirt or debris, as this can cause headaches down the road if not done.
Step 2.) Have your extra hand help you line up the skirts and fender caps and hold them in place, while you go underneath and mark the holes with you sharpie.
Step 3.) Jack up your car one side at a time and make sure you use some jack stands for extra support while your underneath. !!! Warning: Please make sure you do this right and jack up your car at the right frame points if you care about your life!!!
Step 4.) Take your Electric Drill and 9/64 bit and drill accordingly to the holes you marked underneath the vehicle. ( Make sure you double check the holes you marked because there is no turning back once you drill the whole in the wrong place.)
Step 5.) Once you have finished drilling all the holes with the 9/64 bit, take the 1/4 bit and use it to widen the holes bigger, take 5/16 bit and again widen the hole, Finally take your 25/64 bit and widen the hole.( 25/64 bit is the best size hole that holds the OEM retainer in place firmly)
Step 6.) Repeat Steps 3-5 on the opposite side of your vehicle.
Step 7.) Once you have completed drilling all the holes underneath the car, you can move on to drilling the holes in the side of the car for the side push in clips . To do this, make sure the side area is clean again and free of debris.
Step 8.) Take the double sided tape and utility razor knife and cut the tabs accordingly to the size of the holding retainer on the sidekirt and gently put the tape on that retainer and peel off the other side. ( I pressed my finger to the side of the tape thats going on the retainer, in order to make sure it lost some of its stickiness and that it didnt stick to the skirt and instead would stick to the body once the other side of the tape was peeled off.)
Step 9.) Once you have put the tabs of double sided tape on all the retainers (including the 2 on the fender cap) have your extra hand help you line up the skirt again. Once, everything is lined up perfectly and matching to the holes on the bottom, press the skirt firmly against the body and hold it at each retainer point for at least 10 seconds to make sure the tape was stuck on the body. Then take the skirt off and make sure none of the tape is stuck on it, and repeat the same process on the oppostie side.
Step 10.) Once you have all the pieces of tape on the body and they all looked lined up, drill in the middle of each tape using the 1/4 bit. (If your lucky like I was, the exact marks of the holes were imprinted on the tape and will show exactly where to drill.)
Step 11.) Once you have drilled all the holes, take your 9/32 bit and drill all the holes again to widden them bigger. When your done drilling, just peel off the tape. If you used the right metal drilling bit like I told you, you will notice that the holes are perfectly round and clean as if they were there from factory. This is another benefit of the double sided tape
Step 12.) Now take your Primer spraycan (or whatever form your using) and prime each hole to make sure they wont rust in the future. Make sure you let the primer dry before you proceed with the next step
Step 13.) Now place the OEM retainer clips underneath the car( these are the ones that have a hole in the middle in which your screws go into) and take your Skirts and place the other clips in place, and push the skirts into the holes. Then do the fender cap right after and tighten the side bolt on the cap.
Step 14.) Once the skirts and cap are in place and holding up, take your screws and screw them unto the retainers underneath the vehicle.
Now just take a step back and look at your skirts cause your finished
I hope this helps everybody out and if you have any legit questions just post them below. Oh and sorry if the pics dont look real good but I dont have a camera now so I had to take the pics with my IPhone.
I know it says 6 piece sideskirt kit but Im still debating if I should put on the Door Caps or not?? Pretty much the same installation as the skirts. Thats why I put the poll up... First two for the installation of the caps
The other three are for your guys opinion on painting my lip and skirt white, keeping them black, or painting the skirts white and keeping the lip black??
All criticism is welcomed so help me out.
As soon as I figure out if Ill put the Door caps on Ill post that install also. Also installed my wing but finished it and didnt take pictures. If you guys want by request Ill post that up also. Let me know.
