Hey, I'm just about to finish up a paint job. I was wondering do I sand it then do as even a top coat as possible then do a layer or two of topcoat or do I sand and then spray on the topcoat.

So quick sum:
Sand and spray on topcoat.
or
Spray topcoat over even paint.

IM kinda confused with yor question. Im sure I could help you out. I have been painting now for about 5 years. You say you are finishing up a paint job, but then you are asking if you should sand before you paint? If you could clear this up, I would be glad to try and help out.

wait are you saying to spay the paint directly over the old paint? if so then no you have to prep the paint to about 600 grit sand paper. clear it up and i can help to. i work for a auto body shop.

Thanks guys, I have the paint in decent shape (I got a new bumper and I'm trying to make it match my car. I'm using Duplicolor and so far it looks alright (not professional, but not bad) I have a few cans of top coat and I'm wondering what I should do before I apply it.

Do I sand before I put the top coat on or do I make sure that the paint is smooth before I put on the topcoat? (by topcoat I mean clear)

Normally you would really only sand the basecoat if you were going for that perfect show finish. If you did sand it, I wouldnt go anything less than 2000, especially if you have a metallic. From it it sounds like, your not tryin to achieve that show car finish. I would say, save yourself some time and just move on and spray clear. I would suggest to run a tack cloth over the basecoat to get any little evidence of overspray or dust off before you spray the clear.

Good Luck,
Anthony

Yea, i'm touching up the last little spots on it. Once those dry I'm going to spray the top coat (oh and duplicolor on the front bumper stuck right away)
