put in new deck, ..dash lights out??

I put in my friends old alpine and when I went to check to make sure the lights came on, my dash lights lite for a second and went out, at the same time my deck turned off then came back on

check to see if you have the illumination and dimmer wires crossed. i did tha tby accident in my old talon and the dash lights/tail lights went out...might be the problem. otherwise, check fuses
