Can someone please clarify the large differences between using an ebay projector headlight assembly with an HID kit installed in it compared to a headlight assembly with somthing like a BMW projector housing and HID kit installed. I've heard that the cutoff gets distorted when you use the ebay projectors but I would really like some more facts on why I should or should not use the ebay headlamps. If there are pictures comparing these two HID installs and there light output that would be great.

The eBay projectors are usually based around the light characteristics of a small H3 bulb whereas OEM HID projectors are set-up for the light output of a D2S HID capsule. So when you get a re-based HID bulb in H3 and put it in the projector designed for a small halogen bulb, you get a lot of glare and a weird beam pattern.

Do a google search for D2S and look at the bulb difference between that and an H3.

I first started out with an HID kit in the eBay headlights and was blinding other drivers, lighting up signs way far ahead, and just generally having an uncontrolled beam pattern. I've since upgraded to OEM HID projectors and retrofitted them in the eBay projector housing and am 100% satisfied. Light output is absolutely amazing, truely a night and day difference between the eBay projectors and the OEM ones.

Ebay Projectors are like fog lights! Thats all they are good for! Sure if you throw HID's in them you'll get some good light...but if you want projectors for performance lighting... might as well either stick with stock headlights or modify the projector housing.

Also, blackGSX2g just to let you know... H1 bulbs are for some reason being used as low beam bulbs in new cars these days... I dont know why, but they are. But anyways...

Back to the thread. Most of the people here with projectors have converted the actual projector housing inside the headlight. Do get an idea of what this is, do a search for AZ Dave and his Projector Conversion. It will show you how.
