I just got 96' talon esi, and i noticed the shifter knob, or shifter itself, not sure what its called (but you get the picture), is really long. Can someone tell me how i can shorten it, whether i just cut it, or if there is some place i can buy a shorter one...I really dont know, so any input would be nice, because i was checking out someone else's talon interior, and his shift knob was a lot shorter than mine.

Thx

fugmire,

I've done both suggestions give thus far...

Cutting the shifter and re-welding it together will surely shorten the throw, but it takes some of the dynamics out of the throw sometimes making it hard to hit a shift. Also, I found after shortening mine I would bang my knuckles against the stereo at times - just keep this things in mind when cutting.

Shoot, if you want .. send me your stock one [if you can] and I'll send you my cut shifter that was done using a plasma cutter and tig welder [ie. nice and strong].

As for the manufactured short shifters, at least in the case of B&M, these should be refered to as short THROW shifters as they actually sit near the original shifter height after install. The purpose of these manufactured short shifters is to change the pivot point on which the shifter swings to make the throw shorter ... yet keeping the dynamics of the throw easy for the driver.

Just my .02 cents on the subject.

I cut off my shifter and just welded it back together. The only disadvantage is that you hit your hand on the consol if its to short so watch out for that also if you make it too short it isn't as smoot but I think it is quicker and funner!
and that is my .02 cents worth too

Dont buy a short-throw one like I did (Stillen.) It makes it too difficult to shift and the stick was stock height. Just cut and weld the stock one and get those metal shifter bushings while you're in there.

If you don't feel like cutting and welding, you can cut the top 2 inches off, and put a 1/2 inch stud in there. Just tap it and seal it with JB weld. And definately put some metal bushings in. Makes worlds of difference.
