I have a 1998 eclipse gst and my stock rear speakers are going. I want to replace them with new Infinity reference 6X9's but im not sure how much trouble that will be. From what ive read on other forums aftermarket 6X9s are too big. Does anyone know if these speakers will drop in or if you have to take a hammer to it? Thanks

I put Infinity 6X9's in my car and all I had to do was just work with them for a while. I don't know if the "reference" speakers are different though.

It is not the size that is the problem, it is the depth. I have 6x9 Alpine Type S in mine and I had to take a hammer to the metal panel and remove all the sound proofing.

Mine were 3" deep, the References are 3 1/16" deep. Just hammer it and you'll be fine.

i say take them back and get 6.5" and make a 6x9" plate out of ABS board and it'll be fine. I really would hate to take a hammer to my car so thats what I did. If you want I'll make you the 6x9 plate...PM me if your interested

On my 97 RS there were plastic cowels in the back for a smaller sized speaker. The previous owner had the stereo (speakers and all) stolen, so I had to replace it all. I used 6X9 Pioneer speakers, but had to modify the cowels to work. I used a small hobby saw and a pair of clippers. Wow, the wiring was all messed up too, I had to run all new wiring to the stereo.

I installed Infinity Reference 6x9's in my GSX. You WILL have to pound the metal a little bit to get the speaker to sit flush against the bracket. On my car, the sound deadening material cracked and flaked off after a few hammer blows. You really don't need to dent in the metal very much at all. Just hit it a few times, put the speaker in to gauge where and how much you need to hit, dent the metal some more and repeat the process until it sits flush.

What has been said is correct. If you are going to replace them with aftermarket 6x9s, and some "quality" ones at that, chances are the new ones will be too deep and wil not mount because the magnet will be hitting the wheel well. Several options. Easiest would be to hammer the panel. Or get a spacer, hopefully not too think to where you can't put the interior panel back on. Or what I like is going with 6.5" speakers. I believe 2gs without the Infinity premium sound option come with stock 6.5" speakers back there with the proper 6.5" mounting plate. Personally I don't think any choice matters if you are going to have an amped setup that will be setup "properly". If so the rear speakers will just serve for rear fill anyways and the subwoofer will most likely overpower the rears to a point where they are pretty faint. I learned my lesson the first time I setup a system, just bought some cheap 6x9s, I wasn't going to hear them that much anyways.
