Just wondering has anyone done this. I've been reading around and i've seen other people who's done it.. i've seen vfaq's for MR2's and some other mitsu vehicle but I haven't found one for a 1g DSM. I'm trying to do this . My stock oil pressure gauge burnt up on a mishap a while back when someone jumped the car off backwards ROFL but anyway i have an autometer one now and i dont need the stock gauge because it doesn't work anyway.. so i took my dash apart and i've test fitted the VDO gauge it fits but it doesn't fit thru the black plastic trim mask. It also sticks out quite a bit but that doesn't bother me much at all because i'll be viewing it from dead on. however it is a mechanical gauge and im worried about clearance issues with the nylon hose and stupid 50 feet long fittings that this thing has.. anyway just wondering if someone's done it before and if they have any tips.. i know i'm gonna have to cut thru the circuit board traces and rewire it using wires but thats no big deal i can do that. Anyway if anyone has any kinda vfaqs dsm or NOT id otn care.. anything helps let me know..

well i know you wanted Vfaqs but here are some pics for ya

Well i went ahead and did it! here are pictures... i'm not completely done... i still have to rewire that trace i split for the boost gauge fitting... and then i have to wire the lightbulb for the gauge which had to get a new socket ### the old one was way too big.. she's almost done tho.... i'd consider it 92% done :)

if you dont want them to load all on one page (which is how i set it up for that page for quick upload) here are direct links to each one:

Wow that looks great. I think it even motivated me to get off my caboose and try it myself........ wait........ nope it didn't. But it still looks sweet!

hahaha jim! i dont suggest u do it! it sucks! and its a nervewracking experience when ## tryin to cut that trace out for the fitting... totally sux... i wish i had an electronic gauge so that i didnt have to do that but i dont :-/

Sooo, does that mean you're going to put together a small "How-To" article? :sneaky: ;)

I'd eventually like to do the same to my gauge cluster, but more along the lines of the one you initially linked to in your first post, where every gauge was replaced.

maybe... i've hit a slight issue.... the bulb socket is way too long it sticks out into the circuit... i gotta hack it down or figure out a new way....

Well I cant wait until that "how to" comes out I would like to try something like that with my car but with the actual guages like in that same spot put an after martket oil pressure gauge.

How about this guys.. You tell me certain things that should be in it because I'm not too good of a how-to guy.. like i dont stay in order very well... maybe a list of questions would be more helpful in me writing a how-to on this.. because something like this takes so much on-the-fly thinking its hard for me to say "here is how you do it" you know? i just kinda went with it as i progressed.. but it can be structured by questions! maybe you can sorta write an out line for me so to speak :) ask questions preferably in chronological order... or info questions like "how much room is there" or.. "will i have to... " i will do my best to use your questoins to come up wiht a how-to and post that final how-to when this is done (only one last hang up now.. lighting).. so whaddya say guys? help me get a basis for the how-to by your questions and i will put all what i've learned into it? :D

What size gauge did you use? Hope you do a How-to because I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

its so simple to do , why do you even need a how to ?

take out cluster.

dremel out inside of circle..

insert gauge and trim accordingly so it fits.

hook up gauge to input and illumination wires.

re-install cluster.

Now look and admire your indash bling bling

gee, that really made it simple.

PEOPLE like to see what they are going to do before it.

thats why techarticles on the simplest things get over 1000 hits.

dont rain on his parade ;)

haha hey adam! dude i think i found a solution for the lighting! i have all radioshack and NAPA part numbers for this solution so its gonna be real simple.. no crazy stuff.. i'm practically done... i got a lighting solution.. and u get a choice of red or green :D kinda like autometer provides..... keep tuned to find out guys.. pics will be coming soon...:D

i'm curious to see what the finished product looks like. I was thinking about doing this with my future ultralite oil pressure and water temp electric gauges, but from what I've head you have to hack the hell out of the circuit board on the back and sometimes you loose all your idiot warning lights and other cluster electronics.

If it were me, id grab a spare cluster for the mod.
just incase, know what i mean?

how about you put a Amber led in it, so it matches the stock colors.

wow nice job

Another coolspot s the 3rd knob for the ventilation (the air in/out one)
i m sure i d fit great there 2

so there is enough room behind there for a guage without running into the circuit board for the stock gauges/lighting huh? i've been wanting to replace my stock crappy oil press guage with an aftermarket one, and put it there. hmmm.... haven't even taken it apart yet, so i don't know... but is there enough room without having to mess around with that stock circuit board? looks like it from your pics...

thanks man!

yea that looks nice but id def be to scared to mess somethin up by doin that, i just have a triple pillar pod housing oil pressure, volts, and water temp, and one pillar on the passenger side that has air fuel ratio and boost on the dash nxt to a autometer tach.

Ok.. What once used to be here was a jumbled and retardly written, unstructured 5 AM explanation of how to install this guage... coming soon... The rewritten version.....

Holy RUN ON SENTENCE BATMAN

I think I had a convulsion trying to read that. hahahha....

This one time... at band camp.... bla bla bla.... leds here..... flute there..... mount the guage! bla bla......
