the stock Cd-casset setup in my 90 talon. I want to put a new deck in but
i dont kno how to start. Do i need a dash kit?

Pull the trim ring around the deck, remove the four screws that reveals, grip the unit and pull it out.

We're blessed by having a standard DIN stereo setup. If you have one of the double-height units, you will have to find a two-hole trim ring - mitsubishigraveyard.com will have them. The dealership will sell you a pocket to go in one of the slots if you don't have something to fill both of them.

Don't buy a dash kit - you don't need it. Get a head unit that has DIN mounting holes on the side - some may come with the holes untapped, in which case you'll need self-tapping screws or cut down an M5 tap and tap them yourself.

Don't use the stupid fascia ring for holding your head unit in; bolt it to the sideplates. It'll stop it from vibrating, and makes it somewhat harder to steal. You can make it even harder to steal by carefully running a self-tapping sheetmetal screw through the dash supports into one of the sideplates - to get at this you have to remove quite a bit of the interior, and it'll stop anyone that thinks that getting your deck out will be "easy".

One piece of advice though - get a wiring adapter. The &^$#&$ that I bought my car from did his own stereo install, and he hacked the factory connector off the loom. Apart from the small electrical fire he started with his crummy wiring, it made it very hard to work in there (I replaced the factory connectors with some 0.93" Molex connectors, but it was a PITA).

if im not mistaken most decks dont come with them?????

I guess I haven't bought enough decks to know one way or another. My point was rather that the OP should not buy a deck that doesn't, because they won't be able to mount it cleanly.

The nasty Clarion deck that was in my car when I bought it had them. The Blaupunkt Hamburg that I replaced it with also had them (but needed to be tapped). The Alpine unit I bought for my old 944 had them (but the 944's mounting hardware was missing courtesy of a previous owner). That's about the extent of my sample space.
