i don't know if anyone else has experienced this problem, but my horn buttons are very sensitive and have to pressed at a specific point for them to work. this doesn't always work out when a semi is cutting you off. I noticed the montero wheel is very similar but with actual buttons for the horn, anyone know if it would be possible to use that center airbag cover on my talon???

It looks to be the same steering wheel so Id bet it would work. As far as the horn buttons it's one of those problems I think every 2g has. I thought just the older ones had it until I drove my friends 98 w/ 50k miles on it and it was just as bad as my cars. You would think simple things like a horn could be designed better but I guess not. Oh well, I hope the new cover works out for you if you go that route, like I said it appears to be the exact same steering wheel just with a different cover.

I believe he just wants to use the cover not the whole wheel so he can have actual horn buttons. I didnt say the airbag would work or the whole wheel just the cover looks like it would fit. Im against airbags anyway :notgood: after my accident so I say go for it .

yeah, i was just thinking of using the center cover piece. I was simply asking if anyone else had the problem and if they found a solution

Umm.. have any of you guys thought about what your saying?

Airbags don't have covers.. if they did, when they went off you'd have a plastic cover flying at your head... that is the airbag that is shaped like that.

My opinion.. Rip out your airbags, sell them on eBay for $300-$400, but a 4 point and a sweet steering wheel.. now your safer than any airbag could make you and you got a bad ass steering wheel.

It is a cover. It's weakened on the inside to let the bag blow through it.

They aren't interchangeable between cars. You might be able to adapt the buttons from the van to the DSM, but it's iffy. Best-off to do the cleaning of the contacts as originally suggested.

those are just vinyl covers right? And aren't interchangable. I know there are "covers" for the airbag itself, but its part of the unit.

Oh, I see what you're saying. I think you're right on that, they're not a piece you can go out and buy seperateley.
There's a job for you. "I pack airbags all day. You get used to the failures after the first couple go-off early on you."

I just bought an "ebay-special" steering wheel/hub combo, and I'm having trouble wiring up the horn button.

Here is the scenario:

-Hub adapter has one wire (for constant contact of metal ring on hub)
-Horn button has two prongs
-Hub came with a metal ring with a prong (I assumed for grounding the button)

Here is what I've tried:
-Connected the hub wire to the center prong on horn button, other prong on button to the metal ring with prong (via provided wire) = didn't work; when I turn the ignition, the horn stays constantly on
-Switched the wires; center prong used to connect to grounding ring, other prong to wire from hub = didn't work; same outcome
-Tried another grounding source (not hub); same result
-I thought maybe the connection of the horn button was off, so I sanded down the spring to the horn button to ensure there was a connection to the prong for the ground
-Made sure metal ring is touching the metal surface of the hub
-Removed steering wheel, removed 17 mm bolt holding adapter; with just the adapter (wire on adapter not connected to anything), pressing the hub all the way into the steering column (with the ignition on) results in the horn going off. So in other words, with just the hub bolted on and the wire on it hanging loose, the horn wire is somehow grounded (?) causing the horn to go off.

Do I just have a faulty hub? I did a search and the only thing I came up with was that it may be a grounding problem. That or maybe because it's an ebay item.
As of now I removed the fuse, so my horn doesn't work.

Here is a pic of my steering wheel which did the same thing as you described. When hooked up the way they said when I turned the wheel sharp right or left the horn would go off. So I went a bought a horn from AutoZone and took my old ones off and wired up the new one, works fine now. Actually sounds better. Just to let ya know we haev 2 horns on our cars one on each side. Have fun man just holla if ya need anything :thumb:

UPDATE: Well, I found the problem. The wire attached to the ring for the hub was in contact with the hub itself. There was a tiny bit of exposed wire, and it was just enough to touch the hub and ground it. I covered it with electrical tape and now the horn works perfectly. I made a quicky diagram and included a pic of a hub similar to the one I bought.

The horn wire is connected to a metal ring that fits on the hub. If you look at the diagram I posted above, those two pieces fit together, so the whole thing rotates. The metal ring the wire is attached to rotates with the hub.

I didn't draw the picture too accurate. the metal ring with the wire (black piece with gold colored ring in the pic) is press fitted into the hub. When installing the hub, it doesn't get pressed into the steering column deep enough that it will stay in place while the hub rotates. There is a metal connector lightly touching the metal ring to keep contact.

Having trouble connecting my momo wheel to my horn. I installed the wheel a while back, so I don't even remember what wires are for the horn to be honest.
I'm also using a quick-release hub (NRG).

I can't stand not having a horn after the moron drivers I've encountered lately; If someone could chime in that would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, that's right, he honks the horn with the cruise switch. When he wants to change radio stations, he rolls down a window, and he fills the gas tank with a bucket through the sunroof.
