Tachometer, or lack there of...

i just bought my first dsm, a 97 eclipse rs with 80k miles, it is the BASE model, manual windows and locks and everything. The only thing that really bothers me is the lack of a tachometer especially with a manual transmission, is this normal? My friend has a 95 and he has a tach.

It's normal, the true base RS models had no tach in them.

my ex-girlfriends 98 RS has a tach (crazy bi***). I never heard of RS eclipse's not having tachometers, especially the 5-speeds. How common is this? WTF

yeah pretty crazy, and now i have to actually listen to the car to shift and i can't have the music blastin. Where should i buy a tach from? How hard are they to hook up

I have a 96 RS, and my car came with a tach. Could have been an option from the factory though. What does your gauge cluster have in it then? You must have a huge spedometer or something. Anyways, you can buy aftermarket tachs, just make sure to get a decent looking one. I don't know about the difficulty of the install though.

I wired in a Monster tach pretty easily on my old Camaro. I had to wire it directly to the ignition coil as there was no ECU. (There's two ways to wire it: 1) To the coil (Less accurate but it works) 2) to the ECU where the tach signal goes in (More accurate)) It was one wire to the pos. side of the coil, one wire to ground, and one wire to an acc on for the light. Pretty simple stuff if you can splice it to the ecu which is inside the car without having to wire it through the firewall.

Yeah I have seen this in person, looks soooo funny to see. But like stated above that car really isnt even an RS, its BASE. This would explain why certain car sites(like autotrader and kbb.com) that have a drop down box to select your car type, will list BASE, then rs, gs, gst ,gsx.

You can get what ever kind of options you want from the factory as well. I have a 95 GSX that has ALL the options, except a sunroof, you would think if somone is gonna shell the money out for an all option car like the gsx, they would mine as well get the sunroof WTF

my car doesn't have a tachometer either. i just bought one of those autometer tach with shift light for 50 bucks, and problem solved. not that i need one anyways my car is slow

I would suggest getting a cluster that has the tack and install it into your car. Chances are, all the wiring is there, just no tach. It should be held in the cluster with 3 or 4 screws and should screw right into your cluster just like it was in the donor cluster. If I remember correctly, you would have to get the tack from a car equipped with the 420a, not the 4g63 because of a different tach signal. Im sure that you can find an eclipse or avenger at your local wrecking yard that would have what you need .

Beat me to it. I was going to say, after reading the first page, that there was a thread like this atleast once before. I have seen one it person before. There is definitly not that many of them around, but they are out there.

yeah i would try and find a stock one from a wrecked one.YMMV though,or if i did get a tach i would put it in front ofwere the stock one would go.Sun-pro has a pretty big tach thats slim as well,it would go well in front of were your tach supposed to go.

Just to toss around the idea ...

... you could get a nice Autometer [or AutoGage, I can't remember which, all the same though] 4" tach, at AutoZone for under $50, and put it in the hole in your cluster. It's a lot more inconspicuous than having a big-azz shiftlight tach on your dash [it's a big neon sign for theives that says "RIP ME OFF!" ], and I think it looks purposeful. Whenever I see a car with stuff integrated like that, I think, "Yeah, that guy knows how to do it right." In other words, no details are overlooked.

That is freaking weird though, Never knew Mitsu could be THAT cheap about something ].
