Medicine Hat,
okay i was flipping through a magazine at work and seen them selling a bar that bolts to where the seatbelts come from (b pillar) and bend and go just behind the front seats to attach a racing harness to. this would be perfect for me since i want to keep my back seats but need the racing harnesses. Now of course i dont remeber any info about them other than that quick pic. but if anyone knows if they make these for eclipses or something similiar i would be very greatful.

There's the link to Sparco bars. But first off the floor (rear mounting points for front seat base) is not a good place to mount harnesses. They should be wrapped around the bar or bolted to the lower back seatbelt mounts. Second, I don't think anyone can fit in the back of a DSM besides a small child.

You never want to mount the belts to the floor, in case of an accident they can pull you body downward and possibly compress your spine causing permanent damage.

If you want to go harnesses and need a bar for them heres someone who fabricates them for our cars.

Hope it helps :) :thumb:

there are no specific harness bars out there for the eclipse, so you need to have a custom one made, which is what i had done to my talon. The harness bars work great but there are a couple of thinks that i recomend to you about the harness bar. 1st is that although you still have the backseat it id very difficult to get back there because of the harness bar. and 2nd is that if anyone is sitting in the back make sure that they are wearing their seatbelts or they are totally screwed and when you slam on the break they are going to get a mouthful of metal.

Many people give me shit about my setup, but it works just fine and appears to be damned strong.

Good thinking! I never thought about that.

okay i guess i wasnt clear enough in my first question i know not to mount them to to floor but the bar i seen in the mag bolts at the top of the b pillar where the seatbelts actually come out of and then bends and goes behind the seats like 3 inches away.

Found this super old post but was wondering if anyone has found a reputible person or company who fabs these harness bars up for the 1g cars? Gonna be ordering my harness' here soon to accomodate my srt4 seat install.

Thanks!

Before trying a questionable (for safety) harness bar I'd check the angles between the seat holes and the stock rear seat belt points and compare to your harness install requirements. My harnesses state no more than a 20 degree angle from horizontal from the hole to the mount points and on my 2g I found the angle to be under this and so this is how my harnesses are currently mounted.

Pixx? I can't see where you could mount that would give 20* unless it's c piller.

I don't have any pics on hand, but it's down to the lower mount points. I just have eye bolts and my harness snap into those.

So... thanks to urbansmoker1 I actually think I must be smoking something. My description of what's ok and what I have are both wrong! Please don't follow my advice earlier!

I just got off the phone with Schroth and confirmed I'm in the wrong :)

Per Schroth, the recommended downward angle on the shoulder harnesses measured from absolute horizontal of the car is twenty degrees. The hard limit is 45 degrees, but is only recommended on seats they've actually tested for this (which is a small pool of seats) due to the inability of some seats to sustain the crash loads from that angle of the harnesses.

First, for some retarded reason I got into my head that the angle of measurement for the shoulder harnesses was measured relative to the seat back. This isn't true per the above. If you measure my angle relative to the seat back, I'm just under 20 degrees and I guess I had that stupid number in my head from a misinterpretation of the docs. If you measure relative to absolute horizontal, I'm at around 40. However, my Sparco EVO 2 seats are not in the tested list, so I'm in a pretty non-ideal situation.

Again, please ignore my advice earlier. I do question the safety of any harness bars on the market though, at least the ones that use the B-pillar with extensions to the floor, as if those weak downward supports bend in any way the harness will become loose and you can slide right out and quickly die or be injured. There's a video of the same design commonly sold for 2gs (at least they were I commonly sold until the safety questions came to light) but in a Honda showing the driver sliding right out of his harness after his harness bar supports bent and loosened up his belts. It doesn't take much loosening to let your body slip out with the forces involved in car impacts.

Thanks Urbansmoker1 for making me think about it and re-research everything.

No problemo!!! do you have the list of approved seats? I wonder if kirkey is on there. Maybe if a mod can give me one less red chicklet now LOL..

i'm waiting til i put my cage in to put the racing seat with harness in. having issues finding a pipe bender.

Also, can ANYONE give me bend measurements for the main hoop? how long does the pipe need to be? (2g) i know there are 4 bends. i cant really find anything on search. and this relates to the thread :p

The list is:
Keiper Recaro:

Protech Seating Limited (Corbeau):
PRO-RACE PR-1 SEAT, PRO-RACE PR-3 SEAT, PRO-RACE PR-4 SEAT, PROSPORT PS-1 SEAT, PRO-SPORT PS-3 SEAT, PRO-SPORT PS-4 SEAT

There is also another solution to harness mounting by adding a roll bar like this. I then have my harnesses mounted to the horizontal bar in the middle.

lower seatbelt mounts????? theres no way in hell thats up to saftey spec. its supposed to be no more than 20* HORIZONTAL, not verticle.

So from what I gather it's not good to mount them where the seat belt of the back seats are huh? The optimum location would be the C-pillar.
