i want to upgrade my headlight lighting. but i dont want top pay for a HID kit. Im looking for a intense white light. i know there are all sorts of bulbs out there, but What kind of replacement bulbs have the best output/overall look? people have told me silverstars, but i havent seen them on a eclipse.

Yes you have. And yes, they're best. You can up the wattage by breaking the law, but the increase in light output is trivial. You run up against the limitations of reflector design that's a decade old, and yes, they have made those kinds of leaps in the last five.
Despite how damned ugly they are, some of the most stunning lights I've seen lately are on the Celica. I came up behind one on 99, thinking, "Oh, swell, a dumbass with his hi-beams on." I passed him, watching for him to dim -which he didn't- and then I saw he was on lows. The pattern was amazing, and in fact the light was so controlled that if he'd been coming up to pass me I may not have noticed it.
I'm a little worse-off having a Talon, with reflectors not as good as the 2GB. To compensate, I run 65W bulbs in the lows

and 100W in the highs. They're still not that good. The lows are adjusted so that they don't get me flashed by other drivers, so apparently despite the higher wattages, the light output is still controlled.

With the higher wattage bulbs did you do anything to protect your factory wiring?

The wiring's fine with it, but the connectors themselves failed. The plastic holding the contacts on the factory harness were cheezy, and I replaced those with parts off the rack at Auto Zone.

After trying a few different bulbs including the PIAA bulbs I as well settled on the SilverStars as being the best. It is all I run in both of my cars now and have for a few years.

I'm going to wire these in and replace my headlights. In person, They are VERY bright.. :shhh: I hooked them up to my battery to take the picture. There is a larger picture of them in my gallery, That shows them alittle bit better.

i haven't had any experience with those but SilverStars i have, and they are from about 3 different brands that i've tried the best and whitest and brightest.

anyone had experience with the nokya lights?

Be careful about gettin Nokya lights, I hit a deer with my car this past winter and the body shop put Nokya lights to replace the piaa's I had in there. The bulbs had so much coating on them the light output was horrible :notgood: Just make sure whatever bulb you decide to get doesn't have a lot of coating on the glass, it just makes the bulb dimmer

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure the reflectors are different? It looks to me like the trim piece infront of them and the lens is different on the 2gb eclipse but everything else is the same.

Now if you could use the Entire reflector instead of losing nearly an inch of it to make the headlights smaller on the outside you'd never have a complaint.

If I had to do mine over I'd do the 9005 mod for the lows, the highs are so much brighter than the lows, but the lows are still so much brighter than the old highs now that i run the silver stars. Itf you leave the "cap" in place you shouldn't blind anyone either. I still love the Talon's lighing, to me there is nothing better for those long night drives down the interstate or at night in deer country. the spill over as compared to HIDs and those ultra focused projectors means you see farther out in undulating terrain, and illuminate overhead signs at a greater distance.

If only the Silverstar bulbs for the Driving lights did not cost as much for a set as what I paid for all 4 headlight bulbs.

I get the same thing driving my mom's TL, only the light output is MUCH brighter, and illuminates EVERYTHING more fully.

HIDs are definitely worlds better in every aspect. :[

They are brighter.

but not necessary.
Flick that little switch on the left hand side of the column to highs and keep the fogs on (switch rewire) and you won't have any problems seeing anything.

having you high beams on while you fogs are on is illegal i mean i just dont want anyone to get in trouble

Wrong. You can only have 4 lights up front illuminating the road at one time. Usually with DSM's, when the brights get swiched on, the lows also get turned off. Atleast that's how it is for the 1g's.

It's also depending from state to state.

well this may not be dsm specific but hey its only a bulb whats it matter? I recently upgraded my headlights on my 91 celica/gtfour and took some comparision picture.

the left is the stock jdm housing with 55watt piaa superwhites

the rights side is a new hella E code housing(proper beam pattern for north america) with a 90/100 watt light manufactured by autopal that costed me a whopping 8 dollars.

let me tell you that there is a huge difference between a 55watt and a 90watt bulb but of course you wanna make sure you harness is going to be able to handle the extra draw.

Eurodezigns 8500k bulbs on eBay. I know it's eBay but, I got them and was very impressed!!! They give out a really bright white when looking directly at the head unit and with a bluish white when you look on the sides. The seller claims it has a lifetime warranty and they're DOT approved.

P.S: They ship quick and the bulbs are cheap!

(the picture in the eBay page is not real; they're not even close to being that blue.)

true in the uS in some states... but the thread is 3 years old... and the mod is 13-14 years old at this point

.
not on 2gs.

best lighting I ever found in a DSM was good 9005 highbeams in the 9006 low beam socket.
last set of dsm headlights i ever did a couple of years ago, I baked em open, swapped the socket to 9005 so you didn't have to mod the bulb socket, and used a pair of dikes and a file to nip 2-3mm to widen the "notch" for the mounting tab so unmodded 9005s would fit. Kind of like the BMW E34 5 series Website article referenced above except modding the headlights thmselves once instead of each bulb everytime.

Excellent whiter light, cost about $15 including bulbs, and you can replace a bulb without having to mod it if one fails out on the road.

LEt this thread die NOW... please.
