Building Custom Side Vents

Well guys since I am not in Iraq as of yet and have a lot of down time I decided to to add a little more body customization to my car. I am adding some vent scoops to the car, I have the basic shape pounded out and the vents are far from being complete as I only have one layer of fiberglass on the left side and I have to still sand, shape, add more layers of fiber glass. and repeat still I get what I want. Proeject is on hold for a little bit since all my tools are in a storage shed 80 miles away, Thought I would be in Iraq by now. The sheet metal is the skeleton of the vents to give it a little support. From what I can tell when I made my home made wind tunnel... don't ask. Its amazing what a friends 5 car garage and some HUDGE BAY style fans and a smoke machine with dyed smoke can do, we have VHS footage of the test Ill try to get it put to computer, They seem to work Really well.







Edit- They may look like crap now, But the vents are far from done. The car is going to have new front, sides and rear put on and a fresh new paint job

Yes they are, When we made our makeshift Wind Tunnel the air flow was awesome, I could see the air flow trough the vents and out the back, I am going to be putting a rear diffuser on the car in hopes that the two compliment each other. I am board and just messing around with Aerodynamics right now. I was saying to my friend to bad we dont have a Wind Tunnel and he sat there a sec took a drink of his budweiser and said well lets build one.....lol. I am sure it was nothing like flying down the interstate. But I took the car out and there was no noise from the vents what so ever




Edit- Come on leet you should know me better than that, I dont do something if it dont have a purpose. Why the hell would I build side vents that do not function. This aint the F&F

Thank you, the vents that were/still there were done by a body shop and they flow way wrong with the shape of the car, So I decided to had some custom scopes on them that flow'd a lil better with the wheel well and and basic...Fat Ass Roundness of the car. I think the vents will look slick when they are done. I want them to almost look factory but I also want them to have that aftermarket race look to them

Does anyone have any ideas as to what else I could do to help the vents flow more with the body lines of the car?

Its kind of hard to explane, but ill try...The vents help redirect air flow from around the car to through it. The vents are routed in such way that the air flow exit's out toward the rear of the car hopefully creating a little more down force. The person who made the vents in the 1st place did not do much thinking about the design I guess because the way they were before they did not flow that much air. And also they just did not follow the body lines of the. So I figured I would add to the vents so that they looked a little better and had a little more functionality to them. once they are completed I have a place were I can do a Balls to the wall full out WOT test and find out if they work like they are supposed to

This makes sense. Downforce! Didn't think they were for anything else Anyways, very nice job!

Vents? All I can see is that piece of highway guard rail hovering over the trunk lid.

Well, if you're ever really bored, make a front undertray for your car as well. High speed handling is seriously improved. Going from a bumpy ass front end (underneath) to nice and smooth did wonders for the cars capability. Just be sure to bolt it down VERY well. It also helps to have a hood vent, since less air will be flowing out the engine bay from underneath the vehicle (great to reduce lift).

I've looked into designing a diffuser but the design of the rear end makes it difficult to bolt up. Ideally, the spare tire well would probably have to be cut out and replaced with a flat piece of steel.

Im kinda new to the whole thing also so I was always into the performance part of tunning I am now just getting into aerodynamics

The wing is going bye bye, I just have to find something I really like. I am going to build a Frankenstein car. For what purpose has yet to be determined. Any ideas of a wing that would also flow with the body lines as well as the vents? I am thinking about going with the Erebuni GTR Wing not sure yet though
