OK so today I just bought a black awd loaded with onl 15,000 miles on it...it was garage kept so its really prestine condition but the engine when I was looking at it had a bit of ruse on some things, parts I can't identify actually, a thin metal box looking thing under the dohc, and then a bracket looking part had rust on them...

my question, will this rust be a problem, it is only exterior rust on some engine parts...

also I'm not sure if this is engine management or what so if its not a mod can allocate it to the right forum for the answer

Take a pic of what you're talking about.. More than likely the odometer has just been turned back.. Also more than likely that the rust you see is the heatsheild for the exhaust manifold.. Don't worry about it.

I think you might be talking about the heatshield and the bracket for pulling the engine...most have rust... Do a carfax on your car and make sure the odometer was not turned back...it could possibly save you a lot of time and money...I'm sure someone on here has a carfax account and wouldnt mind giving you a report before theirs ends.

Almost every DSM guy I know that has put a ton of miles on their car has purchased a replacement junk yard gauge cluster and "walla" 40K less miles. However.....You can normally tell the mileage bye looking at the interior condition. You may want to look at the screws for the ODO and see if it looks like someone recently took them out.

You may have gotten a good deal. You never know. Personally I purchased a 2g with 120k miles and it runs like a top with perfect compression. A buddy of mine purchased one with 58k and he thinks he has crankwalk. Good luck.

Another thing to check for wear are the gas/brake/clutch(if applicable) pedals. Obviously a 15k mile car is going to have near new rubber on them.

in some cases cars that arent driven much (a ten year old car with on 15k miles on it) will have more problems then one driven everyday.

good luck though :thumb:

Yeah, all of the rubber components will likely need replacing.

wow. that was about pointless. way to bring back an old thread for no reason :toobad:

Amen.

But the first thing he should do is run it a few miles get it nice and warm and drain and replace all fluids.

if it only has 15k miles on it, the brake master clutch master and slave will probably nedd replacing, the fluid will need replacing everywhere, and fingers crossed you don'thave to get new calipers all the way around.

Wiht out driving it regularly the bores get condensation and rust pits, and the rubber seals disintegrate.
the tires shoudl be replaced, and hopefully a fluid change in everything will get rid of whatever rust might have accumulated in the rear dif, trans etc over the last few years.
