I bought some pioneer 4-way 6x9's. The problem is that they are to deep, and the spot to put them in is to shallow. So how do I get them to fit? I don't really want to dent the metal there..can I just install longer screws, and try to keep it even, then put the panel back on? Has anyone else had this problem?

I Installed eclipse 6X9's in my rear, and they are pretty deep as well. I Had to cut and grind the plastic mount down quite aways to make it fit. You may want to try that. Im now left with about 5mm of clearance between the magnet and the metal OMG

1) Pound the crap outta the fenderwell

2) washers on longer screws

3) mount it to the actual interior plastic (after taking the factory grille off) rather than the speaker mounting location.

they all have their ups and downs, but thats pretty much the only 3 ways to do it.

Can you return the speakers?
They really are not what you need for this application. Unless you're running 5.1 in your car, you do not want tweeters of any kind in the back.
The 6X9 format also really limits you to to some not so great choices.
Go here a lurk for a while: http://www.carsound.com/UBB/ultimatebb.php

Take off the 6x9 pods and mount the speakers in them like normal. Get some thick weather strip and put it around the perimeter of each pod. Then put the pod back in place like normal but you cant tighten the nuts all the way anymore. This is what we did on my brother in laws Tsi. Hope it makes sense.

i had the same problem. i thought that crutchfield said i had 6x9's in the rear and i bought a set of kicker 3-way k series 6x9's and it did not fit. my solution was to get a saw and cut the plastic unitl the speaker fit. there is only like 5mm of plastic that is left around the speaker. i think that the magnet maybe touching in a couple of spots on the fender well.

how about some spacers, sound domain.com or crutchfield.com will have spacers in different thickness to fit your application, or you could make your own out of mdf, just trace and jigsaw it out. my cousin had an old pair of kenwood 6x9's and on top of the speaker (where you fasten the screws to) there is a ring that is attached to the speaker surround (the foam part) and he pulled apart from the speaker and that worked as his spacer. you only need about 1/2in to clear the wheel well.

I just added some plastic spacers, but then had to cut out custom holes for the speakers and grill to fit. It looks alright, but it was a pain to do, I would look for another way.

I just cut the shit out of the metal factory mounting bracket....looks\sounds pretty good in my car....

Trace the outline of the speakers mounting holes and where the basket sits with a color marker and cut with a dremmel or a jigsaw.....

Bought them from a friend.

They fit in the spot, I HAD the 6x9s not the 6.5s. I don't want to pound out the firewall, so I'll try spacers. I like these speakers to much to re-sell them.

Why didnt you go for 5 1/4's or 6 1/2's? They fit much better. IMHO, return the 6X9's.

How? The 6x9's are a direct fit. The others would need modification to the "bracket". I'm keeping the 6x9's...

Direct fit? Obviously not.

My new 5 1/4's came with new "brackets". The install took like 15 minutes. :)

Some years came with 6.5's and some came with 5.25's. Mine came with the 6x9, so it doesn't need modding, besides the spacers, to make them fit.

I used some cardboard as a spacer, cant even tell i have an aftermarket speaker behind there. :thumb:

I'll try that, thanks! do you remember what size screw you used? The ones that were in there won't reach all four corners at once.

My 1Ga has 6X9s in the rear. Spacers (Washers) are an option, you'll need to insure you seal the space between the speaker and the mounting area with some weather striping or somthing to that effect if you want to get the best sound out of them. If you do use the washers and don't seal it, there will be a gap between the speaker and the frame. That will let to much air out and it will sound like a$$. I believe if you look around you can find a kit for this application. I've seen 6X9 spacers that will give you an extra inch or so.

This is something I found with a quick google search. I've seen better ones, but don't remember where.

edit: I just picked up some cheap Walmart 6X9's to replace the crap in the back. Well, the speakers have a nice size magnet. and wouldn't fit flush. I made up a spacer braket like the one in the link above. Worked great and speaker fit....untill I tried to put the panel back on. The speaker now sat to far out and the panel wouldn't fit over it. I'm gonna just put those in my other car, and find some with out such a big magnet.
