Medicine Hat,
okay i wanna install my alpine flip out deck into my new eclipse but just got a few questions im not new at installing car stereo but i dont know the eclipse very well.

First off i notice that the harness i bought doesnt have a 12v switched what wire should i tap to get that?

next how do i access the stock stereo to remove it i knew i saw a webpage but all i can find now is the one article on how to take the whole dash apart.(pics preferably)

also my car has the infinity stereo and amp just wondering what the power ratings are on the amp.

and lastly where can i run a 2 gauge power wire through the firewall i wanna avoid drilling through it if possible..

also im a little concerned about the shifter knob hitting the screen when its out anyone have any pics of there flip out screen in the stock location

thanks for the help

On your passenger side there is already a whole there where the factory wires run through. You should be able to fit 2 gauge wire.

actually to be more specific on where you can run the power cable, it is in the passenger's side footwell.... pull up the carpet and you'll see it, nearly impossible to miss

damn you must be setting up for some serious power if you are running 2 guage power cable.

4alpine type r powered by 2 1200 watt amps and a 200X4 for the speakers...

:dsm: HEY I JUST PUT ONE IN A GST TODAY YOU HAD IT RIGHT YOU HAVE TO TAKE OUT THE CENTER ARM REST TO GET TO IT THERE IS 8TO12 SCREWS IT'S NOT THAT HARD TO DO NEXT GO DOWN THE YOUR LOCAL SHOP AND GET THE RIGHT HARNES SET UP GOOD LUCK WITH IT LET US KNOW HOW IT GOES. :dsm: :thumb:

whats the RMS on the alpine subs? Is 1200 going to be enough power for 2? damn 4?! that crazy LOL. You might want to think about a bigger amp for the highs too ... those are aftermarket as well right? You will need some good highs with a bigger amp on them to hear them over the 4 subs LOL.

how are you going to wire your subs? i would wire two of the subs in series and then bridge your amp down to two channels ( if your amp can handle being bridged)...and your going to need some real serious power to make your high end sound good with 4 subs rumbling in the background...probably to MUCH power to make it comfortable to listen to

i think you guys misudnerstanded me im running TWO 1200 watt amps at 1 ohm (hey are stable) the alpine are 350w rms and the amp is ratted at 800 watt at 2ohm which is what ill be running it at so each sub gets slightly under 400watts rms and i have type r 5 1/4s and 6x9s but iv been told that the alpine 6x9s will not fit in the back so im looking for some new ones for that hope this clears some of this up. Iv been running this setup for over a year now with no problems except cracking my windshield!! and a emtpy wallet anyway i really just want to know how to get the dash off so i can throw this shit in there,.

isnt the front 6.5 inch speakers? mine are.. also if you have fitment problems just throw some 6.5 inch in the back too since you dont really need any bass from the highs. you should be fine on the subs i was just wondering what the RMS is on them as each speaker is different. example being I have one infinity kappa perfect sub and i am running a single 1600 watt amp to it. You should be ok since rms isnt that high on those subs. just get good highs with a good amount of power to them..

this thread has seemed to get a little off topic i know how to setup my system i just want to know how to get at the dash so i can sintall my screen and was wondering what the rms is on the stock infinity amp?

all right i got the dash apart but when i looked at the back of the deck there is a whole shitload of extra wires that im not sure of. obviosly the one with lots of wires is the main harness but what are the others iv never seen so many wires come from one deck. so i need to know what the two small wires are on the left side and the 2 bigger plugs.

main harness in the center like u said, antenna on the right hand side. the small wire and the one next to it are for the factory amp junk. the wire on the left is for a factory installed changer.

okay but i dont have a changer in the car and how what do i need to do with those little wires i gonna have to use the stock speakers for a little whille so i guess i still need the stock amp working... how do i go about this

alright that answered my question now i guess ill go by bypassing the amp by connecting the preamp speaker wires to the after amp wires and remove the stock amp all together but i need to know the wire colours that i need to connect

also i cant seem to find a switched 12v to hook up i dont believe there is one in the stock harness so what would be the easiest to tap

I'm beginning to think you exaggerated that statement. http://www.explainplease.com/wiring-diagram.htm

THE POWER WIRE IS IN THE HARNESS. It's the fat blue one! Since you're search impaired, I found five references for you.

Have you considered buying a wiring harness? It might match your experience level better. Before you ask, here are the colors for the stereo:
http://www.the12volt.com/request/request2.asp

Just make sure you tape up any unused wires so you don't lose your dash and tail lights in a few days when the fuse blows. Run your own ground wire too.

People have suggested that you splice the output from the head to the amp out wires underneath the front seat. But, I have a better suggestion (if it is plausible). I installed a Honda radio in my brother's Ford Explorer, which had a head unit and separate amp. I bought a wire harness which plugged into the radio harness, but it also came with a bypass harness for the amp, meaning it connected the input plug of the amp to the output plug, essentially so I could power the speakers with the Honda head's amps with no problem.

Anyway, like that example, I would imagine you could just bypass the amp by either:
a) finding a bypass harness which both plugs could be connected with, or....
b)just use some wire taps and splice the speaker's input wire to its corresponding output wire under the seat instead of running wires from the dash.

I'm not sure how they wire the front speakers since the woofer (in the door) and the tweeter (in the dash) are in parallel, but where do they connect? There obviously needs to be a crossover, so I would imagine it's located either near the amp or near the speaker. I'm thinking about going to buy a Hayne's manual to get an idea of the wiring of it since it's only like $15 at the local auto store.

As for when you get the wiring correct, a simple crossover can be built using a capacitor in series with the speaker (+ speaker wire to one cap lead, other cap lead to speaker +). A 4uf (AKA mfd) cap (non-polarized, bipolar, mylar, polypropylene, etc) should cross it at about 3300hz, which should be safe enough not the damage the tweeter. No too sure what the factory crossover point is, but you probably eliminate them by bypassing the amp and letting the woofer roll-off naturally should be fine, but you can built a 2-way 12db/octave crossover for not too much money (or buy one for a little more).

Also, I've taken the radio out before, and it was a lot simpler than what other people said they did. All I did was take off the two center kick panels (one on driver's and one on passenger's side) that cover the area where the radio is and you have access to the screws which hold the radio in. Unscrew them, unplug the harnesses and pull it out from the front. I'm pretty sure that's all it took, I remember it being relatively simple.

I'm going to be installing an Eclipse brand (appropriate for the application ;) ) head unit in my girlfriend's 97 GST, so I've been trying to read up on this. I'll post some more info about the install once I get it done. I'll be sure to include some pics and whatnot about how I end up doing it.

Until then...

THAT'S A GREAT IDEA!!!

(NOT)

the factory amp doesn't use "wires" like a ford... they are in the din plug, the only thing the amp gets in terms of wires is output poewr and ground... that'swhy I wrote the tech article for those of you who can't figure it out. ther is not a "bypass" wire that you can buy, sicne the amp has the xover in it too. you can either try and find one of the old 4 rcas to din adapters (I haven't found one in years) or bypass it.

As regards removing the radio... seriously.... If you can't figure it out in 3 minutes you should take it to a professional. Remove the trim ring and center console (it's easy) and you can get to the radio no problem...
