Have you guys ever heard that if you have a detact face that you can install the radio itself in a different location and rig the face to still operate the player ???

yea iv seen people stick the face up on the visor and stuff like that and have the actual radio or whatevr you want to call it down under one of the seats/in the glove box.

Mounting the face of your detachable head unit by itself is a custom job. There are no head units that I know of that come from the factory like that. You have to make an extension cable that connects to all the pins behind the faceplate to the main unit. It's probably not something for a novice installer. Then you still have to mount the face somewhere in a custom housing. We did it a couple times at a shop I used to work at.

As for your speaker replacement, I don't see any reason why not. Just swap out the factory speakers with whatever you want to use, as long as they fit. You can still leave the other factory speakers hooked up. But you might as well get a coaxial speaker to drop in there.

with most of the newer head units you are limited to about 1ft extension before it won't work or wont work correctly. (alpine for example).

the shop I work at did this but disassembled the face to hide the display behind the oem shaft radio in a semi restored catalina.

2 ft was too much for it to work reliably but 1ft was just enough.

well i have been trying some searches , are there any adapters that could help me out here ? I am going to mess with it tonight. I was going to try that wire trick i guess you would call it, each pin to pin with wires. Do you have to solder them to the pins ? thats the only part that makes me second guess it . I would rather had a adapter that pluts intot he radio then wires that i can butt connect to. Tell me if you guys come up with anything else.

Youll surely have to solder them, since there really is no other way to attach it. i wouldnt just put wires on and hold them or tape, so you dont short anything. the adapter sounds like a good idea though. look into that, and if theres not one, make one! and make tons o money

exactly what i was going to say. ;)

im the guy that comes up with the ideas i need another to make them happen :O). I opened the radio face and there are no wires runnign from the pins ust solder directly onto the board which makes me want to NOT attempt this. I need the radio out of that location for my guages. I might just toally relocate the radio somewhere else. but i wanted todo the radio face mod cause i have a sweeeeeeeeeet idea but well see.

guys get your owned signs out cause i just got OWNED ! My radio is F#$%#ed . I was taking the face plate off and the thing exploded. springs and screw went everywhere , haha I have been owned . I dont why i can laugh about it cause im out 150 bucks.

wow....how did you manage that? that sucks man :thumbdown

what kind of deck is that?

no, you're not the one who came up with the idea. I helped do an install like that where we put the face behind some semi-transparent mirror glass in the rearview mirror. I had to get some ribbon cable from a computer store and used that. That was over a year ago btw. :p the idea's been around longer than that.b

dude i was taking the face off and i swear there was a bomb behind that thing that just went BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmm. Springs the size of a thumb tack went flying all over the room. I was like OMG then like ten mins later i was in the same spot going OMG . Haha i dont know why i am laugh about it , i think this is called crazy. Ebay here i come for new radio.

...you didn't really need to disassemble that like that anyway.... as long as the face is detachable there should be like 4-8 pins between the face and the unit.....

u think they sell a kenwood to another brand harness adapter ? reason asking the kid before me cut OEM wires and it took forever to figure it out. If not shoul di just buy a OEM harness and work from there.

look on ebay for a replacement face. or just buy a replacement kenwood deck. My favorite kenwood deck ever is a tie between the Z828 and the V7017.

its not just the face, its the 100 springs that are everywhere . I then turned the unit upside down adn all these screws fell out. I am goign to best buy and goign to get a new one today. Not sure what model i am getting i will see what they have.

why did you try and take that one piece off behind the faceplate???? i think you have to actually open the cd player up to get that off. silly billy. anyways what i would do is try and make an adapter. and if you dont i am going to biatch

Since you already figured out which wires are what, I would go buy the reverse harness and solder it back in the car. Then you'll always have the harness back there. You'll be glad you did sometime down the road (or whoever owns it later). I hate it when people cut the harnees out of the car!

You might call around to some car audio shops about the adapter harness. You need to know what unit you're going to replace it with, of course. I could be wrong, but I think I once saw some adapters like these (Pioneer-Sony, etc..) in a catalog at my old job. Good luck.
