I did not find the answer to this in the archive search. I have 2 OLD mtx 12's that require about 1cf of air, each, in a sealed enclosure. I am building a false floor over the spare tire out of fiberglass and mounting 2 "tribal shaped" baffles up above. I must admit that the shape is very strange.......

Will a funky, curvy shape affect a sealed box's sq?

Thanks

I know that my box is right at 2 square feet. I measured it using packing peanuts. My questions is....Will having a really wierd-shaped box effect sound quality. For example, in order to get the 2sqr ft of air, without removing the spare tire, I had to make small tunnel type shapes into all the craks and crevaces. So instead of being a big curvy enclosure, it is a big curvy enclosure with a couple narrow tunnels coming off of it.

thanks

Most of your question relates to reflection, and how the soundwaves from a subwoofer are affected by the surfaces of the box. From what I have read in The Car Stereo Cookbook the wave length on a subwoofer is too long for reflection to be much of an issue within most automotive sub boxes. For this same reason, the book suggests that insulation is not necessary in sub boxes.

its better than nice perfectly square boxes!

just make sure yuo use enough layers of glass... about 12 layers or 1/2-3/4 inch build up is enough, but 1/4 inch just isn't.

When building full range speakers, having unequal sides or curves helps to eliminate standing waves, but as Nutshot already said....

Also, the fiberglass is stronger and less likely to flex with bends and curves.

the shape of the box really does not matter for Automotive sounds. as long as you have the proper air space you should be OK. you can get that airspace anyway possible, with little add-ons like you did is just fine!

how does it sound, or isn't it done/in yet?
