Not two shabby.

Do it yourself?

as always.

its just a simple bondo job. i dont recommend using bondo, though, since it does not adhere to the plastic. i anchored the flat parts of mine in to the back using resin, but its not enough. the plastic and the fiberglass resin expand differently at different temperatures, so it will pop out (as it has done on the drivers side of my car).

not bad. you should make some thing like that to fill in those holes in your hood.

greyforestgst can we expect a write up with pics of the process? looks great btw :thumb:

greyforestgst,

You've quickly become one of my favorite tuners on this site ... everything I've at one time or another considered doing you've seemingly completed (by yourself). Keep up the good work with this car. I enjoy reading about your car's updates.

One question though, how do you keep the fog light bezels in there since one has to secure them using a screw that 'used' to go through the opening?

Thanks,

Holy crap that's sweet. The vents...now this. Man I can hardly wait for the next DIY project! :thumb:

neat, im respected
well at least by one guy :)
your car absolutely blows mine away though.

anyway, to answer your question, they affix using the same hole, screw, and small metal clip; getting them on is a pain, though, since the screw is on the inside of your bumper angled out towards your fiberglass on the inside of the bezel.

oh, and the diy projects will never stop!! the next one i have in store is more performance oriented...i/c sprayer. look closely at the bumper's inside and you can see where i've already cut openings for nozzles to mount. i'll do a write up on that one for sure. the vents will receive some attention soon as well. im kicking around some ideas...a painted fiberglass bezel to replace the rubber trim, louvers inside to force air upwards(think the plastic louvers on dirtbikes). i dont think ill ever close them off.

greyforest.. again man u have done some innovative things that go with the "clean look" style..

as u know i have the full conversion my car.. i have everything BUT the foglights.. which i prob will never get. at least anytime soon.. i dont even have the bezel.

how much to make me a pair?

Fog bezels only came with the hole for your fogs or with lines blocking the hole for cars that came without the fogs. All the ones you've seen with the hole completely "covered up" are custom and can be achieved easily by doing some fiberglass/bondo work.

Anyone got some quick tips on how to bondo or fiberglass this? I will try it with mine. And be running to home depot tonight.

The fog bezels are made out of plastic, PP or polypropylene to be exact. It expands and contracts at a different temperature than bondo or fiberglass so it may not stay intact for long. I took mine to a body shop and they said they'll fill it for $50 but they won't gurantee that it'll last. I e-mailed the folks at bondo.com and they said they didn't have anything to cover and fill a hole that big. I then e-mailed 3M, and they didn't have anything either.

There is only ONE product out on the market that I found that will work for polypropylene. Here is the link - Mr. Sticky’s® Poly-Bonder: TAP Plastics

Here is an instructional video: Instructional Videos: TAP Plastics

I ordered 2 of the smaller ones. Well, I'll see how far it gets me.
What do you recommend to use to cover the hole before I lay down the resin? Like I guess I can figure out how to get it all done, just not sure how to start.

Heat the bezel as shown in the video, apply poly binder to both sides of a fiberglass cloth and use that to cover the hole. After you let it dry, you can sand it and fill it again (without the fiberglass cloth the second time) to get a smooth surface.

A better alternative to fiberglass cloth would be this:
Eastwood Co. - S. S. Reinforcing Wire for Plastic Repair

Well I started this and it's pretty involved. I started with just 1 side so far. I put a cap from a bottle of brake clean to try and give it more of a flat surface. I'll have to find something better to use. I mixed the poly bonder and threw a layer on, then still had a pretty decent size hole in the center to fill so I put some calk in there to help take up some space.
So then I let it dry overnight, put on more poly bonder, layer of fiberglass, followed by poly bonder, fiberglass, polybonder, fiberglass. And wouldn't you know it. That was all of the polybonder I had left. 2 bottles went quick. Time for more.
Can I use fiberglass over this now? You can still see a slight dip where the foglight hole is. Or should I just keep putting money into the poly bonder?

Also, I've never done this stuff before, but when I'm done laying the fiberglass cloth, do I put another layer of poly on top of that, and just start sanding?
What grit sandpaper should I use?
