I'm looking to install a single din stereo in my 93 TSi to replace the double din stocker, and I'm wondering if there are any cheaper options than the dealer for the single din adapter plate and the pocket underneath? It's about $32 at the dealer, which isn't too bad, but I've been looking at install kits on the web and they range from $6-11, but I can't find one for the first gen that looks like it would work. Is it pretty much a dealer only option?

I know on the 2g's, you can use the stock bracket. Then take a peice of something like plastic or alum. and cut a peice to cover the hole. Then on the backside either screw it in on some, or you may have to glue it. That or make something out of fiberglass.

fiberglassing it would be cool. i've done about 4 or 5 different molded radio bezels for either my car, or to sell. definetely looks custom!

somewhat time consuming, and somewhat pricey if you don't already have the materials. you won't really need fiberglass 'per-say', but some ABS plastic, superglue, and a good body filler, and spray paint. (not to mention your stock radio bezel if applicable) all in all, approx $5-10 for the ABS, $4-8 for some good modeling superglue and spray hardener, and about $12 for a quart of Rage Gold body filler (the good stuff) and a couple bucks for a decent spray paint.

approx $30 - $35, and about 4 - 8 hrs of time, depending on how good you are.

definetely a custom look though! worth it in my opinion!

i think i have a "how to" somewhere on my webpage from when i did mine. if not, i have one for my guages which is a very similar process.

I am currently making a custom bezel to house my single cd player and safc while covering up that hole. It is turning out awesome and fiberglassing is not as hard as i thought. All i have left to do is finish sanding the bondo and paint it gloss black. I'll post pics of it when I'm finished.
