Correct me if I'm wrong but i don't think that i have seen anyone do this to their 1g yet. I was looking for something different, functional and something that looked good. I had my car apart for some repairs so i started cutting. Obviously I'm no professional at this sort of thing, but i think that it turned out pretty good.

My tools, were a Dremel with reinforced cutting wheels, an angle grinder and some metal files. Took about an hour to get them cut and filed.

These are unfinished photos, I plan on adding the black edge trim and some mesh style inserts to dress them up a bit.
tell me what you think. Not really good pics, the lighting sucks but you get the idea.

Okay last one, this is what I did before i started cutting. I measured the best i could and marked with a lead pencil. I started cutting from the underside of the hood.

No not yet. The car is up on jacks right now, so until i get it out of the garage i cant get too many good pics. Im putting a 2g manifold, big brakes, ss lines, new cv boots, and some other minor stuff. The car has been on jacks ever since my wheel bearings went out about a year ago. Even worse i got a full tank of gas, i hope it starts.

gimme some more feedback fellas. Im looking for ideas to finish off the edges. I thought about the door edging like on greyforst's but im afraid of if warping and looking like sh*t.
Tell me some more opinions too, do you all think it sucks or does it rock?

nice that design of the cutout u have there looks really good...maybe you can post some more pics and do a write coz i wana do that too....:D

Same, except I have a 1Ga (90). And I would want a body shop to use body filler or something to make them look sorta like the vent on an FC, like a raised area around it.

Something like this, with the lines and area in them built up to a sort of domed bump.

Thats definately something i could try, ive had a little experience with body work that should not be too big of streach. That might be my last resort for the time being though, do to the fact that funds are now extinct. I got my big brakes the other day and i bolted them up tonight, ill try to post some pics if anyone is interested how they turned out.
in regards to the hood, anyone have any other ideas on how to "edge" the edges?

One other thing, could you take some pics of the bottom of that hood? I am wondering if the supporting skeliton is basicly the same on the 1Ga and 1Gb.

If there not, 1Ga owners like myself, still may be without this option.

I ll have some pics up of the underside sometime tomorow, its nothing like the 2g, i basically had to freehand a design, but i did base it loosely on the underside of the hood. I just used the supports has a boundry of how big i could make the vents and what i could do with them. I had to measure the hood and determine where the center was, then i had to measure how far apart they would be with out being off. Lots and lots of measuring.
But like i said ill get some pics of the underside sometime tomorrow so you can take a look.

Ok, here are some shots of the underside of the hood, so you can see what the hood bracing looks like.

Here is another pic of the supports.

and another pic, you can see that i just kinda used the bracing as a rough guide but not an exact template. It left a little room for the imagination. I don't know if you can see it in the pic but my original design was drawn on the hood but I had to revise it due to the fact that I could not get the same design that large on both sides with the room I had to work with. So I shaved about an inch off the design. I wanted them bigger but after doing I think that they turned out pretty good and any bigger might have looked like crap.

Hey guys give me some more feedback, You all's ideas are great and it be nice to have a few more opinions. Also anymore ideas on the edging? I have thought about painting the edges black with hi temp paint, about an inch away from the inside edge.

Well here is a finished pic. With everything on the car, after quite a few mods.

Got some wire mesh and door edging to finish it off, not sure if i like the door edging-took a while to cut it to look right.

beefstew4,
I think it turned out awesome! It's deffinitely a good way to stand out and it also has some function too. I also like someone who has the balls to cut up a perfectly good hood! :thumb:

do you plan on putting some rubber edging on it to clean it up ? and maybe some gutter guard/mesh? would look 10x better than just cut sheet metal, but good cuts doesn't look like you bowed the hood out in any spots.

Ive got some gutter mesh and door edging on there, just could't get the door edging to look perfect, but from about ten feet away you cant tell anyway.

wow, my fault, didn't even notice the picture above where i posted , good job!

They seem to get alot of hot air out of there, but they arnt directly over top of the manifold. And ive been finding when i drive it, the passenger side is acting like an intake somewhat and the driver side is acting like an extracter. Its not perfect but it works. I was thinking about adding a 3rd vent about 6-7inches above the two. Just one straight across not two.
what do you think? Too much? Ive been playing around with simple designs and this was just one of them, parden my crappy photo shop ability.

hmm....looks good, but seems like a little wont do much. If you are gonna vent your hood, make sure it is vented properly and enough so that it actually does something.Unless you want looks. I cut a big hole in my perfectly good hood and the temperature isnt dramatically reduced. It helped reduced probably one or two degrees when i'm at idle. Other than that, i think it helps more for the intake at high speeds. I'll post pics when i take some.

I have not really got a chance to take the car out for some serious runs on the street, due to the fact that i have not restarted my insurance and have not got tags on it yet. the car sat for almost a year. But i did take it out for a quick run yesterday and got it to about 80, nice and warmed up, and as soon as i pulled it in the drive way i could see the heat waves coming out of the drivers side. I still think that the passenger side is acting more like an intake due to the fact that the filter is no longer hot to the touch, but the drivers side (due in part of the fans) seems to be "extracting" if you will. I dont know for sure because i dont have any thing to measure the temps under the hood, but its definately lowering the underhood temps.
Also, it rained the other day, so i went for a quick run, and there was not a drop of water under the vents. I dont know if it just evaperated or did not make its way down.

nice i love the look of your car, the paint is very nice. I think my next exterior mod will prob be to paint my wheels black, i hate my 1g wheels and i dont have the cash to buy new wheels. So i think the black will look good, especially with my new brake upgrade in red.

YES YOU!!:thumb:

Yes, that does look awsome, everyone in my family keeps telling me it will make the car look cheap--this coming from my father who stuck one of those flimsy rubber mast antennas on a nice black infinity j30, just cause the electric one was broke. This car was cherry, dark tinted windows and a huge v6, but that antenna just makes the car look cheap. Now black wheels, polished lip, on a red car--now thats cherry.
