Hey all,
I'm new to the forum, been reading for a few weeks finally decided to post. I currently have a '98 Stratus... which i hope to replace with a 97/98 Talon or Eclipse in the next couple months.

Anyhow, i've been looking at a 97 ESi that seems to be pretty much stock, low mileage (90k kms/ 56 miles), pretty much everything seems great except i really despise the paintjob.

So i went to a couple body shops and got some quotes anywhere from $400 - $1000 CDN for a standard metallic black clearcoat. This sounded excessively cheap to me considering how much i've paid in the past for paintwork. This includes everything (roof, etc) except the engine compartment (which i assume would cost a lot more considering they'd have to pull the engine).

Well.. the real point is i was wondering if the prices i was quoted are average, or if they seem abnormally cheap and will be reflected by poor quality. Has anyone else done a colour change? how much have you paid?

Thanks,

Abstraction

That's what i thought.... i was expecting to hear between $1500-$2K. i mean, it /is/ just a metallic black clear... but it still sounds too cheap to be true.

yeah, that's what i was expecting. They say that it'll include the insides of the doors but not the engine compartment. also, not under the trim in the trunk (which i assume is covered by lining?).

I went to the same place when i was hit in my stratus to have my driverside quarter replaced and bumper painted. that cost about $1400. it's been about a year and a half and it still looks pretty decent without any chipping - the place was actually recommended by my insurance company and is the perferred bodyshop for my local chrysler dealership - so i'm assuming it's not just a chopshop.

the price still baffles me though

yeah. the place here they are going to paint inside the doors, under the hood, in the trunk.....plus but my body kit and APR wing and paint the wing, plus change the color....you should just check around where you live for good body shops...go to a import store and ask....

just called about 12 different places yesterday for my 90 awd. the cheapest I found was 1300, and thats multicoat, and multi-clearcoat with Dupont... for a good paint job, I'd say thats what you'll have to pay.....peaceout

the base coat clear coat alone should run about $400-$500
My dad paints cars and he wouldn't do it for less than $2000.
I'd be very weary.

Yeah, depending on the color, the materials alone for a catalyzed urethane paint job will run close to $500. I just bought 1 quart of base/clear, a gallon of primer--enough to shoot the hood, fenders and trunklid of a BMW I am repairing and I am at $250 right now. It adds up real quick. Some of the clears that duPont sells right now are running right at $260/gallon for clear/activator.
