i have 2 12" type-r's in a sealed box. This might sound kinda wierd, but why are they louder when i put my head closer to the front of my car, like around the steering wheel? Anybody have any idea of how this could happen?

Basically soundwaves reflect off the windshield, the reflected waves meet up with the direct waves out of phase and cancellation occurs, decreasing sound output.Since bass waves generally have large wavelengths, the closer you are the point of reflection, the less chance of the waves meeting out of phase, therefore less cancellation.Placing the box in the correct place in the rear will minamize this, because waves reflect off the back of the car too, and with proper placement of the sub box, the indirect waves will meet up direct waves in phase close to the driver. The speed of sound is around 1127 fps, divide 1127(or you can calculate the actual speed of sound) by the bass freq, this will give you wavelength.Wavelengths that reflect and meet up with other waves at 1/2 wavelengths will be out of phase and cause cancellation

I got a C in Physics.

I see. So for the most part its just a matter of which direction the subs are pointing and where the sound waves will reflect inside the car. Correct?

I dont care what you got in physics anon, thanks for not helping ass:)

Yeah pretty much, but the waves will reflect regardless of the box position or direction. For really low bass, box position won't make a big difference, because the waves are so large, usually longer than the car itself. But for midbass(which are usually louder, because of reinforcement from the interior), where the half lengths are 2-3 feet, experimenting with box position and direction can minamize the cancellation effect.

its amazing what a difference the size of the car makes, i had my 2 12'' Kenwoods and in my mom's Yukon they sound 10 times deeper! i find that any sub sounds shitty in a 1st gen Talon.
