now ive been looking all over the forums here on dsm tuners but ive been getting mixed answers. i have a 1990 GST thats not starting. it cranks and wants to start but just doesnt turn over. now ive read that a possible problem could be the cam sensor or crank sensor or could possibly be the compression which is what im thinking, can any of the alaska dsm ppl shed some light on the situation? all comments appreciated

Check your engine coolant temperature sensor wires. On 1gs they are prone to cracking and braking off. Also if you have a manual test the sensor. Have you checked for spark? Can you hear the fuel pump run when your cranking on it?

i have spark and fuel is going to the fuel rail, after trying to start, i could smell gasoline after pulling a spark plug. ive checked the coolant temp sensor wires and a wire was off so i put it back on. i forgot to mention that the previous owner had put in another ECU from a mid 90's GST so i put back in the stock one and tried to start it. i still got cranking but at first you could hear a little bit of firing as like it was about to start but just went back to cranking. ive searched all over for a few days now and what ive noticed that ppl say to check is fuses, spark plugs, check for spark, compression(which i havent done), timing, fuel, fuel pump(which is working), CAS(which is also working), so now im thinkin it must be the compression and timing...

..Could it be that i have bad gas? and its not igniting? im not sure how long the car has been sitting but im sure its been at least 3 wees before its been started..

bad gas most likely isn't the proplem but if it is go down to the store and get a bottle of that fuel stabilizer. Also you can try putting a block heater on it if it doesnt already have one and plug it in for an hour or so. Then ya i would check the distributor make sure its still good and check the timing.

Those coolant temp wires are important. I poorly spliced mine together when doing a 1g head swap and it turns out that that's how the ecu determines how much fuel to inject on startup. When those wires are broken, the ecu assumes that the motor is below X degree and dumps fuel into the motor. When this happened to me, I was able to get my car running but with ~10.0:1 A/F ratio. Check those first. If you have a code scanner check for CELs too.

As for the fuel, I just had an issue with year old E85 solidifying on my 1600s. I took it to Jack's Transmissions, they ran solvent through them and ta-da, she started right up. So, I would say go buy a bottle of Seafoam and dip the tip of the injectors in that stuff. Then put the rest of that Seafoam in your tank to help clean everything else out.

Good luck.

no i havent yet, but i know now that i am not getting spark actually cause i made the mistake of listening to my friend and not checkin myself but anyways now that i know that im going to check if the timing has slipped and replace that to see if that does anything..

ok i am getting spark, i have fuel, and compression is good. could it be that the coolant sensor is faulty cause when i turn the key to the ON position the low coolant light comes on??

Im having the same problem right now....just went to start the 1g about an hour ago...and the power and everything came on but no crank...i can hear the fuel pump...so i guess tomorrow since im off imma dig in and see what I can find wrong...hopefully its just the battery....
