I am planning on going hahn stage 2. I am also wanting to do a rebuild in the process. My questions is, is it necessary to replace the pistons an the rods, or will I be okay with just replacing the rods?

Re-place the rods and the pistons. There is no sence in just replacing just the rods, also while everything is apart you might as well do it all like lsd and clutch also you can save money this way also do it right the first time. If you just replace on of the parts like your rods when you turn up the boost youll blow a pistion and then you'r right back to square one. Saave your self some money and do it right don't learn from your bad experience learn from everyone else's.

also do yourself a favor and don't be like my dumbass and order your parts after you take the engine out cuz you never know what condition the engine is. I bought my pistons stock sized and thought just my rings were worn out but it turns out my cylinder walls were too so I should bored and got oversized pistons.

hehe if you looking for a cheap LSD go for the new skool racing LSD, I've had it on my car for a while now and it kickz azz ^_^

Also if you've got a good chunk of miles on your engine replace your valve stem seals while the head is out, I didn't and I'm burning oil right now VERY annoying.

i orderd a turbo kit couple weeks ago and now ive decided to also rebuild my engine. its running like crap so im just getting a new one and its better since im turboing it...plus i can run mroe boost!

im going almost all the way. bottom end is being built up completely, new pistons, rods, rings, main and rod bearings..all that fun stuff. head wise i still not sure but i may go most of the way. some of the things can be done later without too much hassle but im thinking right now of crower titanium, retainers, springs, crower stage 2 or 3 cams, pt cruiser style lifter/lash adjusters, all new valve seals and such, stainless valves, and maybe a port job.
all that will be good since i WILL be running 17-20 psi on pump gas.
