Why the lack of turbo kits?

I don't get it. Less than 30 % of all DSMs come stock with a turbo (forget my source if I find it again I'll post it.). So why is it that there are no turbo kits for the 4g63. Even a low boost kit would be fine. The make low boost (4-6 psi) kits for the 420A so why not the 4g63?

Sure the easy solution would be to find a GST/GSX or a TSI and build it up. However, I was searching auto-trader last night and found 5 turbo cars (2 GST, 1 GSX, 1 TSI) out of 80! That's 6.25% of cars for sale within 100 miles of my location are turbo cars. Not to mention all of them were 2Gs (and I like the 1G more). :(

Maybe I should just try to push 180 HP with just engine mods.

They dont have alot of turbo kits for the nonturbo cars because they simply cant hold up to the boost on the stock internals. It is much cheaper and simpler to swap in a turbo motor that can be easily found online or at salvage yards. Nonturbo cars are not meant to be turboed especially on the 1g dsms when you can switch in a 4G63T motor. There are tons of people on this board with turbo swaps just look it up.

Because the 1g 4g63 n/t engine can support the 14b turbo, if you want a cheap turbo kit, buy a stock sidemount, 14b turbo and some intercooler pipes with a new exhaust manifold. There may be a few extra misc parts needed, but my friend actually did this with his, and it is reletively cheap depending if you want to stick with stock parts or upgrade a few things along the way. :talon:

I would not recomend trying to put a turbo in a nonturbo 4g63. There are so many mods like getting piston and rods with the correct compression, new fuel pump, new injectors, also setting up the coolant lines for the turbo among countless others. The cost is rediculous. With a 1g you can swap in a jdm 4g63t and you may get lucky and get the vr4 version that has the 16g and 550 injectors already.

Agreed with him. Your mounts are the same, I think the wiring is just slightly different, and it would cost a lot less than making a turbo kit.

Theres not much demand for turbo kits for a 15 year old car. The 90-94 guys just dont have the support.
Vfaq.com and this sites tech articles have good pages on N/T 4g63 turbo conversion and all the work it involoves.

But I can get a friggin turbo kit for my 1992 corolla

Toyota corrolla sales much > then 90-94 dsms equipped w/ only n/t 4g63's. If the demand and numbers aren't there then companies won't make it. They figure, if people want a turbo 1992 eagle talon, they'll buy one instead of going through the hassle of turbocharging a 15 yearold mitsu pile. Somebody who wants a turbo corrolla HAS to turn to the aftermarket, so the demand is there.

sbr has turbo kits for cheap..works just fine :dsm:

I think that if you buy all the used parts found on ebay, dsmtrader.com etc. you could get a turbo setup for cheap. And no you cannot run 9+ PSI on stock internals. If you were to stay say 5-7 psi I imagine that you would be getting ~250 hp which is not bad for a diaily driven car...
