I am saving up for my turbo kit (star I'm thinking) and supporting mods, I'm about half way there now. My question is if I were to buy a oil cooler(summit has them for like 30 bucks)would it serve a purpose other than an extra quart of oil in the lines and the cooler ? Is there anything extra that doesn't come with the kits that you wish you knew prior to installing?

Nice to hear you are thinking about going turbo redmachine, I've always thought your car was very clean. I personally can't wait to see another red Star turbo kit user up in this mug :thumb:

I'm not so sure about the oil cooler, but I can help you get a little better idea of what to expect when going turbo - and most importanty, how to prepare.

To save myself from having to type up another novel, here's a link with a fairly plenteous summarization I wrote up.

PM me if you have any other questions and I will try and be of help.

Adding a turbo you add extra heat, and that heat is transfered through the turbo by oil and water. Most turbos are water and oil cooled and others just oil, the key part is 'oil'. If you are going to add a turbo on it is not going to be in the ideal area for proper heat exchange. That $30.00 will help the life of your turbo and your engine, it is well worth it. Think of it this way, your blood is like the oil in the engine. If you get hot you want to cool down and the easiest way is from the inside. Well that cooler is cooling the inside of your engine and causing less thermal breakdown, plus a turbos worst enemy is heat. I just bought a Perma-cool for my powersteering and they are nice quality on Jegs.com. Get one that is a good size, look at 1G oil coolers on ebay and look for something around that size. It cant hurt, spending 3400 and spending 3470, what is the big differance. I say go for it but that is just my $.02. :dsm:

Praise the lord to that one, I had never even looked into them before - but wow they are friggen cheap! I now know what's next on my to-do-list, oil cooler! Thanks man for showing me the light :thumb:

I apreciate the reply. I used a perma cool set up on my datsun 240z, it ran hot because it was overbored and stroked(i say overbored because the block was rebuilt before i got it, I had a machine shop bore it out and they said the walls were pretty thin afterwards but I couldn't track down any good l26's so I was stuck.) , overheated alot, I got the cooler and it helped in that case I was just wondering if it would help with a turbo setup and ..... it looks like it would so I'll put it on my list also

Has anyone put an oil cooler on the 420a? if yeah what brand did you choose? and where did you tape for the feed and drain lines?

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but does any one have an oil cooler? I have the perma 10195 and can not find much room to install it in the passenger side bumber area. I installed the B&M tranny cooler easy but this one is a pain. Give me some ideas.
