can it be done? here's my story...
need to replace the transmission in my 1993 plymouth laser RS (non-turbo, 2.0)

my dad scored a parts car for 500 bucks with a rebuilt tranny in it that had only 700 miles on it...a 92 laser i believe. however, it used to have a turbo engine in it, so the tranny is meant for a turbo.

now, my dad claims that this can be done...he said he found info on it and has talked to people about it.

i took the transmission to the shop today, told them to use the mounting bracket and backing plate that came with the new tranny...and all the clutch parts. they called 6 hours later saying it could not be done because the flywheel would not match up or something...and something about the starter. sorry if i sound like a noob, but that's why i'm here cause i need help.

my dad is in russia for 2 weeks so i can't get ahold of him...and i need to get my car back in working order because i use it to get to work and also i love to drive that cute little speed demon =P

so if anyone knows if and how this can be done, PLEASE get back to me. thank you!

Yes it works. They need to change the backing plate, the flywheel, and the clutch,. I bet the shop is trying to use the same flywheel. If the changed the flywheel I bet they didn't change the backing plate. But yes it does work.

thanks for the response...i called the guys again and they said that the problem is that they can't bolt the flywheel to the crankshaft because it has a different bolt pattern. =( i think the engine might have been a different size. turbos come in 1.8 don't they? and mine's a 2.0 if i'm not mistaken. argh. so now i'm probably going to have to score another transmission. guess i'll have to sell this one online or something...

unless there is some other solution? any ideas?

Ok all you need is a different flywheel. You have a 7-bolt motor and you are trying to bolt a 6- bolt flywheel to it. So you just need a diffeent flywheel. You need a 7-bolt FWD turbo flywheel. That is all everything else will work.

talked to the guys again...they said the flywheel that came with my old tranny is not the same diameter as needed...and they cant machine it down. and they said the one that came with the new one won't bolt on cause it has the different bolt pattern. so i guess they can't really use that. unless i could find a different flywheel somewhere, but i don't see how.

what they're gonna do now is take apart my old one and see if it's not just the linkage...cause the problem i've been having is with fourth gear exclusively, it will no longer let me stay in gear. so hopefully they can do that with a cheap fix...use parts from the other tranny. kinda sucks though cause i was looking forward to having a turbo tranny as i hear they are much more durable since they can handle a hell of a lot more torque.

Ok lookI have already told you what you need. a non turbo flywheel will not work (you know this). A 6-bolt will not work with a 7-bolt ( you know this). So why not just get what you need (a 7-bolt FWD turbo flywheel). Call a couple boneyards or look on line. It's not hard to figure out. Just get the right part.

Im getting a turbo tranny for mine too - has a turbo clutch with it so all I need is to get a turbo flywheel?

ya.. can someone prove that?
i believe it...and im probably gonna just go with my plan B anyway, so i think i'm lucky that i found out. i certainly dont want my little baby accelerating slower than it does.

btw...what is you guy's 0-60, out of curiosity?
mine's 10 or 11 seconds. i've tested it a few times with a friend. and that's with no mods.

10 or 11 seconds 0-60 sounds a little slow to me. And switching to a tubo trans is not a good idea, it has a higher ratio, so your car will take off even slower. And it is a myth that the turbo trans can handle more power than the non-turbo. Many people actually put the non-tubo trans in their turbo cars for better acceleration.

its easy to say "that sounds a little slow" without listing your own. i think that's good for a stock engine and everything. a ten second car is a good thing.....its not a turbo or anything.

thats funny... yeah I think our cars can d oit in like 8 by overrevving 2nd gear or 9 by hitting 3rd

Talking about o-60, my friend and I just tested my 0-60 time, it was roughly 7.7 seconds. Its a 92 talon, na, w/ the only mods being the air cannister hacks. If your getting 10-11 second 0-60 you must be launching wrong, or its an auto.
