transmission has play in it back and forth
well the transmission is fairly new i bought it remanufactured from phoenix transmissions and now i know the 5th gear synchros just shit the bed... great... well i can handle that for a while, however, now i put the front end up on jacks because i thought there was something loose in the front end or one of my ball joints were bad because it is making a clanking sound most difinite when i back up then start accelerating foward. Well the suspension was fine but i realized by turning the wheels back and forth that there is substantial play in the transmission. So my question is what exactly is the issue with the transmission besides the fact that it's shit now? And is there a cheaper way to remedy the problem? If not then would an LSD help prevent it from happening again in another transmission? I would like to just build it so it's a race transmission but ive done quite a bit of research and i havnt come up with any solid answers concerning a performance rebuild either, so if any one has any ideas on where to go or what to do, apart from not beating on the car please by all means help me!
thank you,
Mike

Substantial play? Hmm, check motor mounts and loose bolts at the tranny/engine connection.
We really have nothing avilable for our transmissions other than for our diffs. You can go from Phantom Grip to OBX to Quaife (from lowest price to highest). The Phantom Grip and the OBX will require some modifications (with the OBX being the better of the two). All the Quaife requires is $1000. That's it

Agreed (I have one on the NA and I'm quite happy with it) but they are out of business, so I didn't mention it. There is also Alabama man but those have the same story.

now im not real familiar with lds's but does say the Quaife product replace anything in the transmission or does it within the parts that already exist? Because i was thinking if the problem isnt because something is loose or something of that nature, would putting the Quaife product in raplace the parts of the transmission that are broken or worn? Because im pretty sure the problem is right where the axles go into the transmission which is where the lsd goes right?

AMC declares that they used Quaife's patent to make theirs. Has the lifetime warantee aswell.
I want to know if it will work the same for practically half the price.
To the OP, the axles go into the differential, the Quaife is a Limited Slip Differential. It will only replace the differential, and has nothing to do with 5th gear; I have talked to a few transmission shops and our synchros are not serviceable, and the whole shaft with all of the gears on it have to be replaced. I would wait for futher concurance.

I know synchros can be replaced, but Chrysler prefers you to think they cannot. There are kits out there (somewhere) that feature seals, synchros, and everything else you would need to rebuild most of the NV-T350 transmission.
The trick is to find or build a large enough press that can disassemble/assemble the input/output shafts. Also, I believe Terry is one of the few that has actually rebuilt the input/output shafts with the aftermarket synchros (which are only all-brass as opposed to brass/paper-lined), and he said their synchronization capability is sub-par compared to stock.
Rebuilding is a nice idea, but with all the transmissions to be found in junkyards and online, it's not really worth it. I found a local MTX in good shape for just $100 a few months back.

i know it wont help with the 5th gear issue which i think is rediculous that the 5th gear synchro would go in just over a year but i believe i am going to buy a quaife atb lsd ive done research and it seems to be pretty awesome so hopefully it fixes the play in the transmission. Thanks again guys.

Paul is right, I have rebuilt both the input and output shafts. The input shaft you can aquire parts from the dealer if you like. Since 5th gear is your main issue then it would be cheaper to do that. all gears require you to fully disassemble the cases and remove all equipment from them. 5th gear is the first gear you disassemble so that would be the easier one i guess. I have had these tranny's apart a lot so whats easy to me is not easy to you.
The parts to rebuild an output shaft are guarenteed to be aftermarket only and only the synchro stop ring is available. If your 1-2 gears pop out or the bearings fail then you would need to get a tranny for parts or buy a new output shaft from the dealer which is 1200.00
There is another post of information if you look for it. The dealer refers to parts by a slightly different name than the common mechanic. What you and I refer to as a synchro is when actually what the dealer refers to as a synchro. you need the friction ring for 5th gear. The actual synchro assy is the slider both inner and out with the ball detents. The 5th gear slider assy (synchro) is 270.00 and the friction ring is 40.00 last time I checked. Prices may have gone up.
Terry
