In most cases that is due to the transmissions synchronizers going bad.

Does it do it no matter how fast or slow you shift it into gear? If you baby it and the grinding isn't there, it's the synchros.

A grind during gear change could be the result of either a dragging clutch, a worn or damaged shift fork, or a worn syncro ring. Since it is only in 1 gear that you have this problem, we can eliminate the dragging clutch. It is most likely a warn syncro ring, but both will require you to take the transmission apart, so inspect both once inside(if you are planning on doing this yourself)

Yes it does sound like the synchros are bad, seems to be the probable answer.

While we're on this, I want to clarify something about our clutch system. Do we have hydraulic or wire based clutches?

Reason I ask is when I ride my mx bike the clutch needs constant adjustment when it fades from heat exchange. Usually leaving me to adjust it in the air between jumps or on a straight drive..These problems (symptoms) occur on a motorcycles also, where a simple adjustment may fix the problem. BUT, some have hydraulic clutches, which uses pressurized fluid to engage the disk .

If the wire system is used in our clutch setup, then a review of your clutch line may relieve your symptoms. Could be loose, too tight, etc...

I may sound retarded asking that but I can't recall....

Our clutches are hydraulic. If you look in the engine bay, on the far right corner there will be a small resivoir next to the large brake fluid one. It contains the fluid for the clutch line. Also on the bottom of the bellhousing you will see where the slave cyl. rod is(which is controlled by the fluid) pushing the Clutch release fork.

So again, Hydraulic.

Me, damn near 1,000 but that was because I had a fork and assembly messed up on top of synchros.

The place I had rebuild it charges $500 for a bearing and synchro kit. Which is a basic rebuild.(probably what you need). Only thing is, that price is if you pull the transmission and bring it to them, then go get it and put it back in yourself like I did.

If you can't do it, or don't have someone near to help you're probably looking at about 1,000-1,200 granted you only need the basic rebuild.

You gunna tackle pulling and replacing it yourself? That's the only way that it will only be $500.

Depends on your skills as a mechanic, and what tools/know how you have.

I would like to think of myself as average, possibly alittle above now that I've done everything I have. It took me about 3 hours of working. It was spread out over a period of 3 days since I didn't have 3 hours to contribute one day.

Other people I've read it took them maybe 1 hour, maybe 45 minutes. Those people have usually done it a few times though, this was my 1st. Next time I should be able to get it out in an hr or so.

It's not that hard honestly.

Right now I'm not sure how far Corpus is, I think it's a few hours from me, if it's near one hour I could maybe give you a hand.

If i were you, I would just get the rings and rebuild it yourself, transmissions aren't that hard to dissemble and reassemble if you keep everything in order, but I suppose if you never took one apart before, it might be a little hard. It may be cheaper to go to some junkyards and look for a working tranny. I found a A-pillar cover at the junkyard that the dealer wanted $72 for... I got it for $5

I don't think I would ever buy a transmission from a junk yard. There are alot of things inside it that could have problems that you wouldn't know about, and I definitely wouldn't want to put it in, only to find out it's just as bad or near, as the original one...An a pillar cover is alittle more simple than a tranny anyways chris haha

Well if you are really short on cash and need a tranny, it could be a cheaper option. Of course an inspection of the tranny to insure it is in working order was implied, but frankly I don't see how a tranny is in any way more complicated the a $5 piece of plastic

Junk yards are great for tranny's, then again i rebuild mine so i have a biased opinion. You cannot just buy the synchros unless you buy the dealer ones which are 3/4/5 only and about 600.00. If you buy aftermarket the kit is 400.00 and comes in all brass synchro's. I personally have not like the brass setup. I prefer to source out good synchros in used trannys for my personal needs.

The problem is you are grinding a gear which means you may have damaged the dog teeth which will require replacing the slider and mating gear. depends on how much damage you have done. If the fork pads are worn, then the fork will need to be replaced, which to my knowledge is only available through the dealer.

If you can get your trans to houston, i have a friend there than can disassemble it and replace the worn parts. I can sell you the parts if nec or continue on with a shop, whatever you feel is best.

Terry
