Hey guys i just got my new AEM cold air intake and an air bypass valve, and unfortunately I now have to cut it somewhere and install the air bypass. Where on the intake tube do you put it? I imagine the large size of it will probably limit my options on placement. Also any other tips on installing the CAI or the bypass would be appreciated,
thanks,
Heff

im pretty sure you want to cut it high, like a few inches before the throtle body.

you know what? i got a CAI and i thought i'd need a bypass, but it's really useless. Dont go yellin at me all like  hear me out :shhh:
check this out first. When you put on a CAI you're trying to get cooler air, which means somewhat far from the engine and exhaust pipes, cuz they're hot, now the intake tube goes low to the ground where the air is coolest when you drive. The main thing with the intakes is not to go fast through deep pools of water in rain, if there is no way around it, slow down to a crawl and roll through it very slow, you'll be fine, i have done that many times and no problems. I've had mine for months now and i drove in rain and nothing was wrong no hydroblocking. Having a heatshouled type of thing under the filter will help keep out some of the dirt off the filter itself. Now, when you put on a bypass it defeats the purpose of the longer pipe because the air will be pulled in from the closer poit to the intake and you're pretty much running a RAM intake, which is a waste of money cuz you just bought a CAI, which is more, plus the other filter. Just remember about the deep pools of water and forget the bypass, it's pointless. If you want i can take some shots and show you my setup, it's been flawless so far. Also dont forget about winter if you get lots of snow, keep your stock intake. Put it on for winter and bear it for the time being if you dont have a winterbeater, like me. I drive this car all year so i kept my stock one, we get a lot of snow and salts on the roads so i am going to switch in a month or so to my stock one. Hope this helps you out. :thumb: :dsm:

also, if you have a cai you want the most airflow. by cutting the cai and installing a bypass valve, some of the air can escape. just drive slow like stated above.

Well I got it installed without the bypass so far and I was thinking the same thing about whether it's necessary and how it might affect the airflow. I'll leave it off for now but I'll probably put it on later for peace of mind. Thanks for the help, next step - exhaust.

remember on 2g's cold airs go down to the left side of your car, most big puddles that would be cause for worry are on the right side of the road, it would take some serious rain in most places for a puddle to get deep enough to get into the left side that far up.

i have a CAI and i just drive really slow through parking lots and when on the road, I just watched for puddles and drive around them.

I'd rather have the peace of mind of installing my bypass. If I was that worried about losing 2hp by using the bypass, I'd simply follow the instructions suppied by AEM and use a piece of silicone tube in place of the bypass valve on warm days.

Is there anyone out there willing to be helpful in this thread? I'm about to install mine too.
