ok i have an arospeed muffler on my car right now. and i plan on going down the all motor route with my rs. my question is, should i dump the muffler for a full catback or should i just have a custom catback made since i am very happy with my arospeed right now? if you think i should go custom catback, what size piping should i get?:dsm:

I did 2.5" custom piping on my apexi n1 universal muffler. Worked great and saved a couple hundred $$$

how insane are you going to go with your buildup?
i wouldn't go any bigger than 2.5 inch unless you plan on revving like mad for your hp and losing low end torque streetabilty(not that you can't run a 3 inch exhaust and lose your streetability, but if you build it up so its a high reving hp machine, you will lose your low end alot)
will you be running a cat? they provide alot of back pressure, and alot of restriction. luckily my area doesnt have emmissions laws...yet.... so i'm going with a 2.5 inch mandrel bent with 1 glasspack and a nice muffler(havent decide on it yet)

2.5 is even too big for a nt.

ummm.....NO

It kinda depends on how you drive/race. If you like higher rpms, then go with the 2.5", otherwise go with 2.25.

stock is 2.25, if u want to loose power get 2.5. someone who had their car dynod said 2 3/8 was the best piping. but if u wanna get 2.5 go ahead. cause tahtd what ud need if u ever went turbo.

Stock is NOT 2.25 for the NT
For the turbo its 2.25, for the NT its 2".

Just because 'someone' had their car dyno'ed and 2 3/8ths was best for it, does not mean that is what is best for your car....

and thats why alot of people just get the turbo cat back for there n/t because it is good for low end torque on a non turbo, and it doesn't have the two resonators that the n/t does(one right after the cat and one right before the muffler)
2.25 will be more than enough, but 2.5 would help a bit in high end hp, especially if you run a 4-1 header and more aggressive cam, and if you lightened the valvetrain(all titanium or somthing along those lines)you would be able to rev more which would have a greater benefit with 2.5 inch piping.

actually you guy are wrong. the FWD turbo and non-turbo exhausts are EXACTLY the saam except for the downpipe, obvisouly, and the muffler. the only thing from a GST or TSi exhaus you would get is the muffler or the rear section by the crossmember as the muffler flows better. the rest of the exhaust is the same. 2"

Gee, you sound like you know alot about this....how many exhaust systems have you put in?

I've done more exhaust systems then 95% of the people on this board have even looked at.

This is the last time I'm going to say this:

NT EXHAUST IS 2"od.
TURBO EXHAUST IS 2 1/4"od.

and thats for 1g.....i don't know for 2g...but the engines are totally different between a turbo and non turbo so the exhausts will obviousley be different.
if you look in a stock exhaust catalog, there is 2 totally different part #'s for the turbo and non turbo....because as rogue said they aren't the same diamater
