if i put a strait pipe on instead of a catty, what do u think the chances the cops will know i have one instead of a cat?

Don't do that. You'll lose torque b/c there won't be enough backpressure. And I don't know how strict emissions are in your state, but in VA they don't do under car checks. The only way to tell would be if you failed emmisions and they specifically checked for it.:dsm:

I've never personally heard of anyone being pulled and ticketed for a test pipe, I wouldn't worry about it one bit. Think about it, do you really expect a spiffed up, big bad cop to get down on his hands and knees to look for a catalytic converter? I don't think so. Only problem you may have is if your state has emission inspections, where even then I'm sure you can find a shady place that's doesn't really give a rat's ass.

As far as a performance gain, don't expect anything major. I've got a test pipe and did notice the system seems much less restrictive, the car revs out longer and is alot louder. I say go for it, it's a cheap and easy mod that if not anything else, sounds cool.

is there any way to remove the catty to get the extra power but find another way so u can get the right amount of back pressure w/o losing power. may b a dumb question but im a n00b.

i was just told that i could get a header that has a tap that creates back pressure so you dont lost as much low end.

If you're looking for a little more back pressure than a test pipe, how about a high-flow cat? Should keep you legal as well.

hi-flow cat is a good way to go, straight pipe will be cheaper. Hi-flow cat is probably better to keep some low end torque, but if you want high end a straight pipe will be better. We don't have to worry about any type of emissions checks or anything like that here in Iowa, if you do go with a straight pipe, make sure to keep your cat so if you have to take your car in to be worked on you can put it back on.

I pulled my cat and put a Straight pipe and before I could barley even get a chirp in second gear now I do it all of the time with out even trying. I was told the backpressure thing was not true. All I know is that my car is alot louder and more powerful without the CAT.

I've got straight pipe instead of the cat, also i have no muffler, straight pipe there too, I have no backpressure at all, but its hella loud and sounds really nice, it backfires alot too, but i like it, If you have the money go with the high flow cat. I had to money but i am a person who likes to tear shit apart and tinker with everything, so all my straight pipes were a good weekend project. Heres a pic of my straight pipe....http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=57432

i put 2 and a half strait pipe from my header back and it made m car faster but i also put a flowmaster on it but it made it faster and if i were u i would do it:thumb:

how does a flowmaster sound on a dsm? it sounds horrible on my friends 4 cyl. mustang. what headers u using?

i think mine sounds tight and im goin for performance so even f i didnt like it , it still made my car faster!

i also want perfromance but im looking for a very low tone exhaust, i heard one on an escort and almost #*$! myself it sounded so good.
