ive been reading some post about 420turboed motors and i wasnt sure what all the talk of crankwalk was. i plan on turboeing my 420a in the very near future and i think that i might need to know what this is.

reaserch it.its a pretty common topic.you should be able to find what your looking for.

My mom has been complaining about a ticking noise in her '98 Eclipse GS for quite a few months now, and after reading about crankwalk, it seems like that could be it. What engine is in that car? And does anybody know the best way to find out if it has crankwalk or not?

420a's almost NEVER get crankwalk. I dont believe I've ever heard of a single incident.

Here's an interesting quote i came across...

" Crankwalk is the VTEC of the DSM world. Not too many have it, but everyone says they've got it!"

No, crank walk only occurs to turbocharged cars. The gs is a non-turbo 420a engine. I wouldn't worry about it.

Should I rebuild it before turboing it, only reason Iam asking if the enigne is not made to run a turbo I might have to rebuild it if the engine only has 20k on it.
will,:(

not unless you want to run high psi. The 420a is a better engine then the 4g63 and runs faster than a gs-t or a gs-x when it is boosted. Without doing your internals you could run 8psi safely.

Mainly the only reason it will run faster is because of the larger turbo and because of the lower compression. Fine SUIECLIPSE or 98Turbo420A and ask them about their turbo'd 420a's and see what they have to say.

crankwalk occurs manily in manuels. Any car can basically get crank walk. But for the dsms it happens in the 2nd gens 4g63 (95-99)manuel. A good way to know u have crank walk is when the clutch begins to stick and it wont release.

simply put, crankwalk is when the crank, rotating mass which connects the piston rods to the flywheel, starts to move or walk it's way out of the engine block. Obviously not a good situation which will require the block or the crank or both to be machined to keep it from happening again. Rods may also bend and pistons may be damaged as a result, even a possibility of all your problems making it up the way to the valve train if the pistons are messed up enough. Crankwalk can happen on any car, it is more common on some then others, especially miatas. Most cases (almost all) on dsms are 2g turbo cars, especially 95-98 and especially 97's. A good portion of the cases are higher hp motors with strong clutches, which tends to put extra stress on the crank. There are plenty of cases of it happening to a 15 sec. stock dsm and there are plenty of dsms running 12's with no problems or signs of crankwalk being a problem.

The ticking on the 2g gs is more than likely just the lifters, however, if you aren't good about oil level, it could be a spun rod bearing. Just a note 420a's spin rod bearings more than 4g63's crankwalk.
