I've been reading up on the SRT4's and was wondering if the Pistons & Rods can be used on a 420a when rebuilding the engine or if one needs to change the crank and belts to SRT4's as well.

Or is it just too much of a pain to even get into it

No, they don't fit. The bearing journals are the wrong size as well as the rods are too long. There's a whole host of other reasons that they don't work but I don't remember what they were.

As some would say in this, use the SRT4 Complete Block with the 420a head.

If he wants to do it easily, than that won't be an option. The SRT-4 and any 2.4L after 2002 use a different crank signal (NGC) which can't be read by our computers.

Grab a 2.4L from any 95-02 caravan, pt cruiser, cloud car. That's the block you will want, which will make it easy. The old style block have the CPS on the back of the block, where as the NGC blocks (03+) have the CPS on the front of the block.

You can use an SRT block but you would have to rewire the whole car with an SRT harness and use the mopar computer or run a standalone. I'm sure someone has decoded the crank signal by now so you can use megasquirt. Or install a trigger wheel.

The NGC crank signal works very well with both MS-I and MS-II now! :thumb:

Awesome. I was hoping you'd clear that up.

By what you guys are telling me it seems to be easier and cheaper just to rebuild using JE Pistons and Eagle Rods and just boost the car that way

pretty much. 2.4's aren't hard to do but it is more work than a basic rebuild with forged internals.
