Having a badddd overheating problem on a newly turbod 420a. Replaced t-stat with 160 degree, purchased a new radiator, and purchased two 12 inch slimline fans. At idle the temp will creep and creep to about 212. I take it for a drive down the road and it will continue to climb and not come back down. Just wondering what other people were using cooling wise for there 420a turbo setups. Really stumped on this one. Thanks in advance!

If your temp is growing when you drive you might need to check you HG. Is it blowing coolant out into your overflow you might have a busted water jacket on the HG.

Yeah something is not working correctly on your car. I'm going to guess the headgasket, same thing happened to mine before I went turbo. I'm running 180 degree thermostat, OBX rad. hoses, OEM rad. and fans and mine doesn't ever go above the half way point. Even on a 110 degree Arizona day

my suggestion is pressure test your cooling system and do a compression/leak down test on the engine, also like previously stated check to see if your t-stat is opening and is properly orientated in its housing. just my .02 best of luck.

Thanks for all the reply's guys. I have done a pressure test and a leak down test and it passed. I pulled the upper radiator hose and started the car and it gushed out of it like a fire hose. Replaced the radiator cap. Compression tested at 160 across the board and as i said the motor was built with a Cometic head gasket and was driven non turbo for 1800 miles with no overheating. Switched to turbo and she over heats.

What im wondering is if two 12 inch slimline fans are not enough to flow cool air threw there. Theres no shroud like the oem ones.

Oh and as for the thermostat. It was opening at 195 degree when i had the oem t-stat in it. Then opened up much quicker with the 160 degree.

Also tried running the car WITHOUT a t-stat. All it did was slow down the creeping to overheating.

i have 2 12 flex fans and it never over heat, before i had them could i couldnt drive over an hour my car start over heating.

is your turbo coolant cooled?

if so how did you route the coolant lines?

a lot of us 2gnt n/t-t guys run the slim line fans with no shroud however is it very important to rewire them so that they both turn on at the same time, not like factory fans where one is for the A/C. So if you have not done that, then i would start there.

also i assume you bought that 160* T stat from howell, if so its a gimick T stat, its really a 175* T stat, so dont base your coolant temp #s off of something that doesn't exactly exist. however keep in mind you can drop the temp rating of you t stat by drilling a tiny hole in it.

other that that your system should be fine. you may just have a small air pocket, thats my guess.

leave the radiator cap off, and let the car idle for a while, it may burp and fart, and overflow onto the ground a few times, definitely so now that you have driven it, but it will eventually stop doing so, and then you will notice a rapid drop in coolant level, by then your T stat has finally opened fully, just add coolant to top it off and put the rad cap on... good to go...

No the turbo is not coolant cooled.

Yes this is with both fans directly wired to the batter for maximum output just to keep it somewhat cool.

Trust me, i don't believe an air pocket is the problem. I have burped and farted this thing about five different times, AND even used the bleeder screw on top of the t-stat housing. No go.

And fyi my coolant temp #'s are based off a thermometer in the coolant itself with the cap off and with a $5K Matco scan tool for exact temperature.

Maybe your slimline fans arn't flowing enough CFM's to cool the coolant. If you can, put a stock fan back in if you have the room. Trying using water wetter with less anti-freeze and more water.

Throwing these out:

-Check water pump belt tension
-Any obstructions in front of the Radiator/Condenser?
-Check Heater Core for flow? By-pass the lines for diagnostic purposes
-Are the fans oriented the correct way? (pullers/pushers)
-Feel the radiator for any cold spots

Again thanks for all the reply's.

Like i stated before i yanked that top hose off and started the car and it blasted out of it. Also i visually looked at the water pump and saw no problems whatsoever.

The slimlines were 1250cfm's i belive.

The heater core i don't believe is plugged. The heat in the car works fine. But as posted before, tonight i will bypass that just for diag purposes.

Also tonight i have scrounged up two stock fans that i am going to attempt to install tonight if i can make the room. I believe that the shroud on the stock fans will greatly help me.

I did feel at one point in time (not sure which time there has been so many) that the right side of the radiator was almost cold and the left side was boiling.

Air pocket?

Just purchased a dual coil radiator today. Also going to install that. Thanks again.

Installed new radiator.

Made stock fans fit.

Burped system with my coolant funnel.

Max temp will get to is 217. Then will drop down to 208 when the ac fan cuts on.

If i turn the ac on it will stay around 210.

Still seems a little hot to me. Anyway to engage that secondary fan faster? Given this is a 100 degree day and North Carolina humidity so..
