hi yall, my name is chris. im from houston, tx. new to the forums.

i picked up a 1997 eclipse rs automatic last week. its got 120k miles. i really like this car, but it has a few probs. most of them i am doing searches on this forum to get info, but this one i dont even know what to call it. it seems like some small tubes for the intake, im not sure if they are connected properly. something doesnt seem right about them.

main symptoms of the car is first the fuel mileage is horri-bad. like 10 mpg. also the car idles poor when i come to red light, feels like clutch isnt releasing, and sometimes make the car shake and want to die. if i put it in nuetral it seems to stop it. other than that the car seems to drive and handle just fine.

1st pic is a 3 way thing on the back of the intake. the tube on the right goes to the the egr right? that looks fine to me. the middle is plugged off with a bolt. that seems fishy to me, is this stock? the right side of the 3 way has nothing on it. does this all look correct or is something wrong?

2nd pic. here are the two tubes. one goes up and to the right, ending near the red thing. it is not connected to that or anything, basicly just sitting there open. you can see the other tube is a little lower, going off to the left, ending just past that bit of wiring. it is also not connected to anything. i am wondering if these are supposed to be connected to the 3 way and if so which goes where. it would seem to make sense, but i dont want to just try and cause damage.

i had the codes checked at vatozone:

1494- evap? i am wondering if these tubes have anything to do with this code?
0171- #1 cyl too lean - how do i fix?
1390- timing belt skipped tooth. do i need to replace belt or can it be reset?
0740- did not give a mitsu code, closest matches point to tourque clutch converter?

im mainly looking for help about those little tubes, the other stuff i am still searching but any info about those things would be very appreciated. i just got laid off, so im on a really tight budget. i have a great set of tools, and i am mechanicly inclined, the thing is all my experience is with motorcycles not cars...so i kind of feel like a fish out of water...or at least different pond LOL. problems aside, i really like this car, im glad i got it!

YOur gas milage could be poor due to the fact your car has a huge vacuum leak and off timing. You can fix the timing problem, but i would replace the belt and tensioner since you will have it open. I beleive that open vacuum port goes to your evap system, I dont have my 420a anymore so i could be wrong. That vacuum port leads to a metal tube dear you belt area, that should fix that one. YOu could have more. I would check all your lines.

Also when you get your timing belt back aligned do a compression test.

The fitting tee's off in three directions one (Far right in picture) goes to you EGR then the next one (middle goes to your cruise control) and the last one goes to you FPR (fuel pressure regulator). If you don't have the FPR or the cruise control on there you can plug them.

The OP has a 97' so his Fpr is located back by the tank.
The RS doesn't have cruise control so that is why the middle one is blocked off. The one on the right goes to your EGR and the one on the left goes to your Evap, so that's why your getting that code.
Cylinder 1 too lean can be caused from your timing being off or from a bad 02 sensor.
Start with fixing the timing, like dsmpat said you might as well replace the belt while your at it. Here's a walkthrough.

Welcome to the Forums.

The diagram is just a sketch so he got a principle. I have a 96 RS and my far left is plugged as well as the middle. I was under the impression the EVAP vacuum line was the located at the top of the throttle body.

i do have cruise control. im pretty sure i have an rs, thats what it came up as for insurance. im not sure if the cc is connected or working, but i definatly have the buttons etc for it.

anyways. i put a plug on the left side. disconnected the battery for a while, and started it up. the cel light did not come on right away, it came on after about 5 miles driving. im guessing its the belt. the car wasnt having the poor idle prob when at red lights until the cel came on. tomorrow ill have the codes checked again and see what codes it is or isnt throwing anymore, ill check check the mileage again, and post up saturday.

im still wondering what those little loose tubes are for... /shrug

Look under your intake manifold and see if there is a black box. It's almost as wide as the IM so you can't miss it. I doubt it will be there, and that is why your middle vacuum port is plugged off.
Unless it's been taken off there should be a sticker on the back of your spoiler passengers side that says GS or RS.
If you have a vacuum gauge, hook that up to one of the ports on the IM and let it idle. Usually when the timing is off you have a low vacuum at idle.
