Ok can you guys tell me about this process you guys seem to be doing with the hacked air can and k&n filter and removed silencer. DOes this achieve the same thing as buying an intake, such as an injen short ram intake? I was planning on buying the injen, but if hacking the can and stuff achieves the same power gain, then should I do that?

I'm not real familiar with the 1G intakes, but the 2G intakes are basically plastic versions of short ram intakes with a big restrictive resonater/filter box on the end of it. I've heard(but haven't yet tried) that if you replace the box with a K&N filter that clamps to the end of the stock intake tube, you can recieve similar results to that of paying bucks for a short ram intake, or up to hundreds for a cold air intake if you add some re-routing hardware to direct cold air from that intake hole on the front fascia(3" pvc pipe works fine).
The stock intake tube may not be perfect, or pretty, but if keeping everything stock, but changing the filter, adds power, then why the hell not!
Check out www.2GNT.com for more info, that site is pretty informative.

i have a 91 GS and i did the whole "chopped up air-can" procedure on my car. have to say you definitely feel the difference and it costs you nothing more than the price of the K&N filter. our can is metal so it is a little harder to chop up but still not impossible. what i did was pretty much cut off everything except for the top "ring" of the box (about an inch) to which the clamps attach to. this way once you attach the filter it is being held in between this "ring" and the cover of the air-can to which the sensor and the main tube are connected. Oh yeh, I also left one bracket on to keep the filter stable. i left the one closest to MAS. it is underneath the filter and does not interfere fith air flow.
if you dont want to cut the whole thing up, go to dsm.org - mods - intake and you will see how you can simply make some holes in the can to improve airflow..
good luck

i drive a 92 eclipse 1.8 i guess i "hacked" the air can, all i did was unbolt that **** so i have the stock air intake tube and filter with the maf inside, that **** works GREAT cuz it's less restrictive than that big ass box and i get some intake noise oh yeah...and it's free. there's a tutorial here in the 1G turbo mods on how to do it. one

ok so i'm looking at the air can, and there's an l part that feeds the air to the can, should I remove that when I hack the can? Cause it won't be connected anymore anyway.

yes, there's 3 bolts you need to take out, and theres a black plastic hose that goes to the can, take that **** out too, one

while you at it, you can get rid of the resonator box or at least chop it up too, we have a discussion going about that too in this forum. ("Container leading into the air can") Im going to try it this weekend.
