Driving home today.. Stoped at a stop sign like most good drivers do.. Took off from the stop sign in a normal manner.. gave it some gas up to about 5000 rpms shifted into second @ about 9 to 10psi.. clang nothing... no second no fourth no reverse. First, Third, and Fifth are fine. There was no grinding.. no loud noises.. just a slight clang sound. its not the shift linkage. no fluid leaks. Idk haha. I dont know a whole much of anything about trannys. seeking advice. THANKS.:confused:
 
Sure its not the linkage? Does it grind trying to go in, or will it go in but its just not there?
 
Sounds like shift linkage to me. Check the linkage on both the tranny and shifter and make sure the retainer is in place.
 
i have almost the same problem, but in my case, i dont have the 3rd and 4th gear, a mechanic told me that i should get a new tranny or a used one :notgood:

This is not your thread, but I will give my thoughts anyways.... This time.. :)

If 3rd and 4th are just not there, think broken fork or collar.
 
this has happened to me several times on 2gnts and when it is the gears that pull backwards it is the c-clip that holds the shift linkage to the bracket onj the top of the tranny, take a look at it and get a few extra for back up just in case.
let me know if you gte it , ohh yeah it would be the one in the far back of the two clips (kinda under the TB) have fun
 
It has happened to me also, twice. It was the little clip that holds the shifter cable in the place poped out on me, and I had excact symptoms. Like I could put my shifter into 2nd, and slide it left and right. Have somebody move the shifter, and you go take a look at it. 1st time it happened to me, I said I need a new tranny, but I didn't.

99% sure you're wrong. Sooo yeah. Tell us why you're so sure.

If you suddenly, just out-of-the-blue lost half the gears in your transmission and don't have any clunks, bangs, rattles, smoke, fire, or tales of one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse riding out when you popped the hood to check things out, then you're looking at those cables.

In layman's terms, you've got three gears on each of two shafts inside the transmission. Moving the shifter up or down selects which shaft, while moving it side to side selects which gear on that shaft to engage. This isn't a simple look if the cables are still there diagnosis. You're going to need someone to row through the gears while you look under the hood to make sure the cable moves.

Hell. Disconnect the cables on the bellhousing and manually move the controls on the transmission. If you feel them still clunking into each gear, then the problem is *not* your trans.
 
well if you want we could do this, you give me $5500 and your car with the bad tranny, and you get my 2gnt COMPLETE with slicks, roll cage etc etc etc!!
i will even tune it up there when i get there, damn that car would be a good 10.5 car in ohio!!

The gold C clip on the engine side cable was gone completly. I assume that's what I heard clang on the ground when it happened. I was looking to hard for the worst case instead of the obvious, but id rather be wrong and have it be something simple!
 
I lost the same gears like two weeks ago, Turned out my shifter bushing on the tranny had torn...so it would be tight when in 1,3,5 but slip into the tear on the 2,4,R gears. simple fix
 
you might as well buy a coule of the those gold c clips and keep them in your car because youll be suprised how easily youll lose them. the bad thing is there like 5 bucks a piece i believe
 
Never happened to me...I guess I was too busy blowing holes in bellhousings and exploding clutches LOL.
