you will need a 3 jaw puller to remove the crank pulley. Now in order you use the puller, you will need to leave the crank bolt in and threaded in by a few threads. This is to give the puller something to push against.
You can also get a 3 jaw puller specifically for chrysler damners. The puller has a large hardened rod that will extend into the crank hole to push against.
You cannot remove the dampner with the belts still on the pulley. This is obvious but i mention it just in case.

Try your local parts store and see if they have a renta tool program, while most do you can easily find a 3 jaw puller, best bet is to find a snapon or cornwell dealer and order the crysler puller for 70 bucks.. we have it and it only takes 20 seconds to get that puppy off,, couldnt live without it!

I got my Chrysler specific crank pulley puller from Autozone for 65 bux as a loaner. I use it so much that I just kept it. I dont suggest pushing against the bolt with anything else as this will cause the threads to creep and thats never good. Just get the appropriate tool it will save you some headaches.

if you heat the center up just a little with a torch it will expand to let it off easier.

That will also destroy the rubber ring and ruin the balancer. Do not use any heat unless you plan to replace the balancer and front seal afterwards.

i am having the same problem right now i had to take the transmission out to replace the flex plate which actually broke somehow. now i am replacing the timing belt since its over due by about 50000 miles i have a 3 jaw puller but it will not come off i used a half inch drive ratchet with a pipe on the end of it for more leverage and it still wont come off. I thought about heating it but its a good thing i read this "That will also destroy the rubber ring and ruin the balancer. Do not use any heat unless you plan to replace the balancer and front seal afterwards." would it be possible to cut the plastic off and get the timing belt off without taking that pulley off?

For really stubborn pulleys, I suggest getting the Chrysler pulley puller... I don't think you'll be able to get the old one off, or the new one on, with that pulley still in place.

The Chrysler Harmonic Dampener Pulley will do the trick. Autozone should have one. It fits perfectly on the pulley.

I had the same problem & this is what worked for me,
now if i remember correctly i took a 1/4 drive 6 inch extention, insert that into the bolt hole, (it is made to hold that so you can turn the crank with a ratchet). place 3 jaw puller in place incerting the center into the 1/4 drive portion & crank away SLOWLY. it should pop. it took everything i could think of & nothing seemed to work for me either buit for some reason i went that rout & bang! 2 minutes later it was over.
Good luck.

I tried that once... the extension got jammed into the crank snout and got stuck. Luckily that was my old engine... if I ever want to sell it though, I'll need to get either a new crank, or get the old one drilled an re-tapped.

Yeah I am sure it not the preferred method but just trying to give possible alterrnatives, I had the same issue & for some reason it came right off! thats kinda why i mention the Slowly part, I wouldnt recommend wrenching the daylight out of it. if you try it just do it with cautions as with anything, take your time double & then Triple check it, than maybe get some sleep.

The crank pulley is only 4 bolts and should slide off. If not, I always just PB blast it for a day and hit around the circumference with a rubber mallet. Does the trick everytime and is not a hassle.

unfortunately my dad had a brilliant idea of holding the crank pulley bold while he super tightened the clutch back on and now the crank got stripped out so now we have to drill and tap the hole.... hopefully it works and the pulley still wont come off its rediculous hasnt budged today i even tried using an impact driver on the pulley puller.... still didnt move

What? The 420A crank pulley has no such bolts... please be aware of which forum you're posting in.

i need some help. I tried insurting the crank bolt a few threads and using the puller. this only resulted in a mushroomed crank bolt. I then tried the 1/4 inch extension method. I have a misc bunch of crushed sockets and estentions stuck in my crank pulley. Any advise?

A picture would be helpful, I can't quite understand what you're describing.

As much as this is said on here, I'll repeat it again. You MUST, MUST, MUST get the correct dampener. The three jaw can drive you nuts! I just took off a pulley yesterday on car that had 165k on it and had sat for over a year down by the shore. You would have thought I was taking off a bolt to the valve cover when I turned the center screw of the dampener (alright, not that easy, but you get my point | |
