1G 1.8 Eclipse, any Accleration Boosters?

Hey everybody,
I'm running a 1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse (Base) 1.8, my acceleration is soo laggy these days, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way I can boost this? I just put in Bosch Platinum plugs and wires, last owner still had stock ones with 140k+ miles :( Anyway, any suggestions would help, thanks.

Not much you can do. I know a guy who turbo charged it but its a pain. Probably the only easy way to get a 1.8 faster is to have a AWD turbo model push it:D
 
Well, you can open up the air flow with an intake, header, test pipe, or open cat, and a muffler or cat back exhaust. Better air flow through the engine increases horsepower and helps the engine run easier. And loose as much weight as possible, pull out stereo equipment, spare tire, seats, whatever you don't need. If that's not enough, you can also spend about $350 bucks on a Venom engine controle module that supposedly guarantees 25% more horsepower.

Seems like Dr2BDif had a really good point... Going fast has a price... You could put an intake on it and then pull off the exhaust and port and polish it then run 3" piping all the way back to a nice cat. and then a real nice performance mufler... Remember less bends mean better air flow. I have the SOHC and I'm thinking about seeing how fast I could make that engine because to swap out to a bigger motor means that you are going to have to Change transmissions and then a new computer and a totally new wiring harness... Basically you have to switch everything. So if you were serious about making that engine fast you could bore out the cylinders and get forged pistons and then you could tri cut the valves... There are ways, but they all cost considerable cash.

Not sure. He has not dynoed it or ran it at the track.
 
If your planning to stay non-turbo, the most horsepower you could ever have is 140-150 tops. Really there isn't nothing you can do. Intake would help your acceleration, and give you alittle more torque. Horspower would be upgraded also if you ported the intake. As for your exhaust system, run a GS-turbo 1st gen exhaust system on your car, a 2 1/4 keeps the preasure and leaves free flow. A good performance catty would help you out lots too. As for your plugs and wires, I would just do NGK... they were stock in our car's and they run the best. K&N filter will do some horspower upgrading, and hacking the air can will help you out also.

If you do plan turbo, it would be wise to rebuild the motor, put two head gaskets on to lower the compression, then get you a turbo that would give you a nice upgrade. The guy on here has a T3/T4, and he is planning to have 250-275 HP.
 
A quick fix would be to advance yor timing a little ,it will help on your initial acceleration.
 
True, advancing the timing does do that, but also it makes you run rich and ruins fuel mileage :(
 
venom 400 control module. fasteracceleration in the 1-5000rpm range. gettin it for mine peace.
 
Is there any headers for the 1.8L??? You said run a gs turbo exhaust system... Wouldn't the turbo holes be a little annoying?
 
Yeah it would be wierd if you were running down pipe back, but were only asking you to run from Catty back. That would give you good pressaure out from your down pipe. As for headers for the 1.8, no one makes them but you could get some fabricated for you, which costs good money.
 
Uhhhh... again, you have me confused. Alright for one, you have the 1.8, and the 2.0 DOHC turbo is not compatible for your car. It will not work at all, trust me, there is no way in hell without a new head on there. Sorry man, no way it will go on, either get the 4G32 exhaust manifold which is found on the 1985 dodge colt or Mitsubishi Mirage, or get one fabricated.

sorry I just got confuesd with what you said... thanks for the info... maybe I'll port out my exhaust manifold to up performance... Is any of the other maniflods you mentioned any better than the stock?
 
Just port the hell out of that manifold/exhaust part on the head, get it nice and smooth from where the head is, to the manifold, and to the downpipe hook up. Then maybe later if you plan to stay NT, get some headers fabricated[made] for it. Any exhaust shop can do it [ again this won't be cheap ]. The cat-back system on the 2.0 Turbo would be perfect for our engines though, to keep preasure, but have a free deep sounding flow.
